The question is ...WHY? - I bet the cost of moving the house would be nearly as much as building it from new!

They're probably building bigger and sold the old house first. It was brick clad as well so that's a fair bit of work!

Indeed why bother. I passed a place selling 'pre-loved' houses in Whangerei last month.

Our friends did it almost 3 years ago. Bought a huge 15000 sq. metre plot for less than 100k, 4 bedroom house for 130k including moving it 40km. Now valued at 400k +, so it's not always as daft as it sounds

No its not. Its one of the CHEAPEST ways to home ownership in NZ. I don't understand why MORE people don't do it. Now that I know about it its certainly something I would do.

Because most places have covenants that say you must build to a certain standard in keeping with the neighbourhood, so you can't just relocate a ramshackle old hut in the middle of nicer houses.

You have to get resource consent, outlining work needed to be done to bring it up to standard (pretty easy to get according to my council planning officer mate).
Obviously you wouldn't plonk an old place in a brand new housing estate, but who would want to do that anyway, may as well stay in Britain
Saying that though, there were a few ramshackles among newer houses where we lived on the North Shore, I know our shed was from South Auckland.
The house we are in now came from Palmerston North in 1966.

Hey that's the brick one on the main road! My mum told me they had moved that. I didn't recognise it but recognised the one in your first pic then thought "but that's not the house next to it".

That house has stunning floorboards inside. It was used for a while as an antique shop I think.

My Aunt and Uncle moved their house. It was a lovely old farmhouse they bought for $13,000. There's no zero missing from that.

Admittedly it was a few years ago but not that long ago!

The actual cost of our friends house as above was only 45k, & it's wonderful

Exactly. My Aunt did buy some land and spent a fair bit redoing it obviously.

But it still worked out cheaper for them.
