Nothing. It’s a perfectly nice place.
Just stay away from patea for the meantime unless you like asbestos.
Seriously, Taranaki and New Plymouth in particular is great. Still has smaller town features about it but has shopping, pubs, bars and cafes, art gallerys and some decent schools. Lovely place. Because of its location a lot of the time it kinda skips off the tourist radar. But it is nice. Personally though, I think the view throughout Taranaki of Mt Taranaki is very cool.

I hear New Plymouth has the odd tornado... but apart from that it's lovely. So I hear. Never been there. Too far.

The New Plymouth area has some of the best surfing in the country. It also has the coolest cricket ground in the southern hemisphere.

I'll let you know after I've visited in March for the NZ WOMAD music festival www.womad.org
I've been told that compared to Wellington it is rather small...could you easily get a job there?
