It's quite common here in the USA. We had it last Christmas round at a friend's house.
You buy a special fryer, looks like a giant stock pot with a gas burner underneath. The oil is so hot that it seals the outside immediately and we cooked a 20lb turkey in about 40 mins! It doesn't look like the safest of arrangements though-they did it in the garage but I still made sure I knew where the nearest exit was

It's not greasy because it seals so quickly, the fat doesn't penetrate the skin I'd eat it again. Got some photos somewhere...

Sounds good to me. Roast Turkey can be a nasty dried-out affair.
