What would you call the North & South Islands?

It appears that "North" & "South" were never officially recognised as proper names, leaving the door open for them to be potentially renamed.

So what would you call them?

Jafa Island & Sheep Island?

Dr Grant said the islands could potentially be referred to by all four names -- the 'North Island' or 'Te Ika-a-Maui' and the 'South Island' or 'Te Waipounamu'.
Quite like the Maori names. In my limited knowledge of Maori, Wai means river and pounamu is greenstone.

I also like the idea of having both the English and Maori name. The translations are Te Waipounamu (the waters of greenstone) and for the North Island to Te Ika-a-Maui (the fish of Maui).

I always find it slightly odd that some towns etc have retained their Maori name and others haven't. I like to see the actual Maori names as well.

Peoples Soviet Socialist Democratic Republic of the United Northern Islands of New Zealand (PSSDRUNINZ for short). For the South Island we'll just use "the other bit".

Alternatively I suggest a sponsorship auction to naming rights.
