Smile What are these plants?

As I was stuck in a convoy behind yet another boat (they truly are the caravans of New Zealand but that's a rant for another thread) I noticed these things. Are they Digitalis?

Makes sense, it was outcompeting Foeniculum vulgare. Weed v.s. weed.

They are most definitely Echiums - commonly known as Pride of Madeira.

Very popular in my part of the world San Diego. Only last about 10 years then the plants get very woody and start to die. They will seed though when mature.

Lovely for big sunny banks.

Supplementary question, what are those bushes with the yellow flowers you often see growing on vacant Christchurch lots? Pictures to follow (Mayyyyybeeeeee).
