I've moved this into a thread of it's own as it isn't about the day to day NZ budgeting or exp v income costs.

Rain Water Harvesting.
That makes it sound all so green . In reality, here in NZ, many properties are serviced by rain water into tanks or from bores and wells. Some don't even use filters.
We have 3 rain water tanks which were built with this property . We do have a connection to the mains water supply which goes to one tap in the kitchen.
Impact on our water bill? No idea. Water is metered here but as most all of us have rain water tanks ,I have no way to compare.
Solar Water Heating.
This was part of our business in the UK. By comparison , there is very , very little here & what is about is very expensive. We would like to install a solar HW system but is it cost effective for us right now? No.

Not entirely sure the full 60k will be filled with Melbourne being in a drought
We also have bought a refiltering machine ($15k) that recycles 90% of recyclable water (of your normal water use its about 60% that can be recycled the rest is too full of toxins).
The water cost will drop dramatically but still get charged for sewage (flow of water used to push effuent out into main sewage) until a test is done to see the reduced flow back into the main system.
Along with solar power for the pool we have no use for heating as the house is highly rated for both thermal and acoustic insulation.
We designed the house so in no room do you need lights on during the day (subject to overcast days - and then only for reading lights).

A 5000 litre tank being fed by 100 sq Metre roof will deliver approximately 12500 litres of water per annum. This information is available on government websites. More roof or larger tank means more water.
At about 20 cents a kilolitre you will save a wopping $2.50
Dont put water tanks in to save money do it cos you need the water for your garden or similar reason
