What magazines tell us about culture.

What magazines tell us about culture.
I couldn’t help but notice a list of the most popular magazines by country on Wikipedia.
As you might expect in New Zealand "Straight Furrow" and "AgTrader" sell more than "The Listener". We like sheep, it makes sense.
As the weather is miserable in the UK they appear to be preoccupied with shopping and watching telly.
Australians, as we all know from watching "Kath & Kim", are a bit thick. Accordingly they seem to mostly buy women's magazines and a splash of pretty homes type stuff.
Swedes like furniture and food along with a socialist workers magazines. Good socialists those Swedish.
The Germans appear to mostly read magazines relating to industrial production and cars. As you would expect from such practical, industrious people.
It's stunning how well national choice in magazines uphold stereotypes!

That's a bit of a crap comparison, with some downright stupid assumptions about the people that buy, read or subscribe to them.
The top one in NZ is AA Directions; perhaps cos they're all such wonderful drivers or maybe it's because it's a free mag posted to all AA Members.
A lot of those at the top of the list in the UK are also freebie giveaways.

This time of the year in the UK that is unfair.... Not only can we read about the weather OR television we have the added choice we can even do BOTH....
Now then it's freezing wet outside what's on the tele.........
Today, the most widely distributed magazine in the world is the Watchtower Announcing Jehovah's Kingdom or simply The Watchtower just above Awake, both published by Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the legal organization of Jehovah's Witnesses.
What does this tell us about society and culture?
That there's an awful lot of weak people in the world that dont have the guts to say 'not today thank you'.

I've regularly declined their invitations for a chat, but if they feel the need to push me the magazine, I just put it straight to recycle.
I don't have religion myself, but I don't begrudge those who do. No reason to be impolite IMHO.
But Charismatic....you ARE a naughty boy eh? No mention of skywatch or tvguide in your post. And how could you not fail to notice? I fail to notice wkipedia evey time I use the laptop.

Yeah it's a bit misleading. According to the site it is the number of issues circulated as reported by the publisher. Not the same thing as readership. So if a copy of Watchtower was popped into your mailbox then that counts towards circulation.

I tell 'em I'm an atheist & no thank you. Leaves them stood looking rather non-plussed (exactly like this ) for about 30 seconds & then they walk away

I didn't see "pig hunter" or "shed" on the list both speak volumes about nz culture

Wouldn't it be like goats milk/cheese? i.e. taste/smell like the animal it originated from.

On my table I have Geographical, Popular Science, 2 different PC mags and the latest edition of Cosmo (Feb 12) What does that tell you about my cultural leanings?
