Teenager admits killing in park

Sophie Lancaster was with her boyfriend when she was attacked
A 16-year-old boy has admitted kicking a woman to death in a Lancashire park.
Sophie Lancaster, 20, and boyfriend Robert Maltby, 21, were in Stubby Lee Park in Bacup, Lancashire, when they were attacked on 11 August 2007.

At Preston Crown Court a youth, who cannot legally be named, admitted murder, and attacking Mr Maltby.

A 15-year-old youth is due to stand trial for the murder - he denies the charge but admits causing grevious bodily harm with intent.

Murder charges against three other youths - two aged 17 and one aged 16 - were withdrawn.

None of the youths can be named because of their age.

Remanded in custody

The three youths who had the murder charge withdrawn were remanded in custody by Judge Anthony Russell QC, Recorder of Preston, after admitting GBH.

They will be sentenced after the conclusion of the murder trial of the 15-year-old defendant.

A jury is due to be sworn in and a trial, scheduled to last three weeks, is expected to start on Wednesday.

Miss Lancaster died two weeks after the incident. She was in a coma after suffering head injuries and never regained consciousness.

Mr Maltby, an art student, also fell into a coma, but recovered and has since left hospital.

This sort of mindless, senseless thugery is all part of our reasons that we left the UK. Although we didn't experience it first hand, we saw enough of it and felt if we stayed our chances of one day becoming a victim to it was increasing...

Happens everywhere

Also in New Zealand

We were in Scotland in Jan, when the Scots lass (tourist) was murdered here; everybody over there was shocked as NZ has this clean green image.

This happened about 10mins drive away from our home, they apparently were a gang who hate goth's!!!! So kicked this young girl so much that when paramedics arrived were unsure of her sex and age, as this poor girl was in such a state. I know this kind of thing happens the world over but every week there is another incident. My friend son started at the local secondary school he won't go to the toilet as he is robbed and beaten. Then you get people telling me it's no better at the other side of the world you know!!! Well I will take the risk!!!

On Monday in the NZ herald there was a report that a women had gone to the pub leaving her 2 kids by themselves, OUTSIDE the house, including a NAKED 2 year girl ! She started trouble at the pub too !
But as i tell everyone, my relatives do not even have locks fitted on their doors here (but they do live in the countryside)

It's a risk worth taking though, even though NZ has the same issues they are not as prevalent in most areas.
