Re: What are Forums good for?
When we were in the process there was very little real information and internet forums, such as this, were still very much in infancy. There wasn't even a dedicated British Expats area for NZ on this site, what little there was, was mixed in together with the Aussie forum.
The few things we gleaned were that things were expensive, houses were cold and choice was limited. Jobs were hard to come by without Kiwi experience and that we should be prepared to be without work for a good period of time. The message then was loud and clear 'bring everything you possibly can'. Nothing has changed much!!!
I am ever grateful that I found these things out before we came as it did enable us to build some comfort buffers into our new start. e.g. we saved hard before we came and we're still wearing clothes that we brought with us six years ago. We've made everything we own work that much harder for us, things we might ordinarily have chucked we kept and have been extraordinarily grateful for them at times. Things we didn't need we've sold and again been overjoyed to have actually had something we could sell for a few bucks when times have been tough.
Financially we were unexpectedly set back by approximately six months salary x 2, on top of the costs to get here. Despite being prepared for some setback, we've never been able to climb out of that hole since. So yes, heed all financial advice, especially in these times when money is tight all around, and exchange rates are a nightmare. If the finances don't stack up, then there ain't nobody gonna be happy.
