Wow I'm absolutely shocked that a question about saving money on flights could cause all this. I am sorry if I offended anyone, was just trying to help. I will keep my thoughts to myself in future. Thanks to those who pm'd me with positive advice, much appreciated. Thanks guys

You can book a flight from anywhere to anywhere no matter where you are. the site will try and direct you (cookies or ip address tracking)
to your countrys site but you dont have to use it.

Thanks for that justcol, very useful to know. I didn't see why it couldn't be done. Have you booked flights for yourself on uk sites from nz too?

Welcome to BE Mrs Brightside We have always booked our flights by email through our UK local independent travel agent using our UK account. Before we left, I got the email address & found it very easy to book. They were cheap as they could put a package together from the cheapest flights at the time.

Buy a house in New Zealand, plants seem to grow at all times of the year. Better learn to enjoy gardening , lots of gardening.

Be careful you two, the only thing saving you from being branded "Happy Clappers" is that you haven't got to NZ yet.

a) not true, I get 5 weeks paid holiday a year and if I add up all the days I am entitled to take off each year it comes to well over 50

b) I never do a minute of unpaid work, I do my 40 hours and thats it. in the uk had to do overtime to get by, so I am working less

c)I came to the waikato straight off the plane and have no desire to leave, its a lovely part of the world (apart from hamilton)

This thread is specific to us as individuals, right? Specifically what we wish we had been told. What might be true for you or I is not always going to be true for something else. 50 days holiday is impressive, if thats what you really get, then yes - you get a great deal out of it! In truth, that is the sort of time-off I expected to get by moving to NZ, sadly it has turned out to be the opposite for me.

a) For the same firm I work for now, in the UK I got 30 days holiday + bank holidays, plus I could buy an additional 5 days. Here for the same firm I get 20 days + bank holidays with no option to buy more. For my previous firm in the UK, I got 28 days holiday + bank holidays. In my other job in NZ, I got 20 days holiday plus bank holidays. A lot of books and tv shows do mislead people that they get a lot more time off here and far more leisure time

b) Hmm - the majority of expats I work with here in AKL, they regularly work additional hours, especially Saturday mornings unpaid. be it for the Warehouse, be it for charity, be it for DHL, be it for Datacom, be it for HP. Until I handed my notice in, I have genuinely worked 55-60 hours a week (I am paid for 40). Everyone else in the team does the same - to not do that, you would be identified as "not a team player" or not "committed". There are other brits who refuse to join in with this, which I understand and I was one of them in my previous role, but it has hampered them in their workplace.

c) Yes it is - i wish I had been told this prior to me leaving the UK. I think Hamilton's a great city, went to the gardens the other day - very impressed. The nightlife and selection of bars/live bands was really impressive over the Easter weekend.
