Re: What do people drive!!!
hi
They are getting v. expensive to buy over here and harder to find, however, if u come with spare pounds to spend that may be different. If u are earning dollars, then one decent split screen sold for $23k and I am sure other ex-pats will agree that is getting a tad expensive.
Running costs no problem, spare parts, u need have contacts but they are available, engine bits and panels, the camping interiors are very very rare.
We nearly sold ours before we moved out here and decided they day before the shippers came to take it.
We are so glad we did.

Thanks for the reply fella, i pretty much thought they wouldn't be cheap to buy but both of us want one so we will probably go halfs on it (my misses and me). Do you have contacts for parts? and more importantly would you be willing to give said names of contacts?
I know of a VW specialist in the UK who builds the split screen type camper and stuff using fibre glass , their work looks excellent so would try and source bits from them, they seem to know what they are doing, but importing parts may be a bit expensive.
I think taking the split screen with you was probably a great choice despite the costs involved. you could always recoupe them if you were to sell it, give me a PM if you ever do in the future, well not until next year as our flights do not land until 21st jan 08.

here are couple of replacement guides, bringing a car over may proove costly,
as it neds to be registered $400 + then if there is a an ounce of rust on it, it will have to be fixed and get a cert of compliance cost varies.
Also if you are coming here with residency and you have owned the car over a year you dont pay GST (vat) on the value of the car
If you dont have residency you do, you have to way up the pros and cons and is the car replaceable

Driving the little chimps around in that tiny Hyundai Excel or similar may be saving the planet but at what risk to the kids!
http://www.aa.co.nz/motoringimg/Used...atings2006.pdf
"Safety should be high on the priority list for used vehicle buyers, and as a large percentage of the New Zealand vehicle fleet is made up of used cars".
Of the 22 large cars rated, 14 scored above average and only two below average. Luxury cars also displayed a similarly consistent standard of safety. In contrast to this however, light cars were found to have a poor standard of occupant protection in the event of a crash.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you want to blend in and be like the locals you should be thinking about getting an old Japanese car and 'pimping it up' (does Tim Westwood voice and waves arms about) so dat itz got da mad skillz to pay da billz, etc. Here's an example.....but imagine something a bit more like a Toyota Vitz on a budget of 50 quid....

Oh the shame!...I drive a (silver) Honda Oddysee (...not being able to spell is a pre-requisite!)...It's a useful tool for carrying drum kits over the Haywards to gigs on the Kapiti coast, but apart from that and the usual trip to Pak 'n Save it stays in the garage. As the sticker on the back window says... "My other car is a motorcycle" - a Honda CB1300 to be precise. I love it to death. We try to get out on it every weekend...usually in to the Wairarapa for a blat round the twisties after Sunday brunch in Martinborough or Greytown. Awesome fun!
I can't bear being stuck in a car, but I can understand those who think that bikes are dangerous. Truth be known it's the kiwi reputation for being the worlds worst drivers that makes bikes dangerous here in NZ. But it's the scenery and quiet roads that make it for us. Just need to keep that eye open for plod or those lovely plain coloured vans at the side of the road!

Or that's what they're known as round here.
I can understand the thrill of driving these Islands on 2 wheels but I'd rather have a ton or so of metal between me & a Mack truck, than a bike lid!

Sure, I have been known to exceed the speed limit for a mile or two on a quiet country back road, but otherwise bikers are by nature very defensive drivers - constantly aware of what's going on around you.
Sadly it's generally car drivers who are coccooned in their safe world and distracted by cell phones, screaming kids and loud stereos that will be quick to claim "i didn't see you" after they have pulled out in front of you.

Yes, you're right, there is certainly a theory that if you ride a motorcycle you will end up dying on it. But I pride myself in being a "sensible" rider, although I'm probably tarred with the same brush as the hoons who give us all a bad name :-(

The only really close scrapes I have had on my bike since I've been here was in Auckland when, on 2 occasions, car drivers tried to run me off the road!!
I am another of the reasonably sensibly riders and I certainly drive VERY defensively. I certainly think the exhilaration of riding the roads in NZ is worth the risk - but I do constantly remain very aware of all the potential hazards on the road.
I don't know about you but I have found that the truckies over here are ceratinly the most aware of all the drivers on the road. I have actually had a few situations where they have helped me out. The most memorable was when I was crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge at night in a howling gale and rain. I was doing about 30 km?h on the bridge side klip-on lane and I was 100% certainly I was going in to the harbour below especially as I passed each bridge parapet (?). About 1/3 of the way across I suddenly found a huge truck in the next lane to me on the windward side and it had slowed to the same speed as me. The driver had obviously sene the problem I was having and stayed alongside me all the way across the bridge! What a gentleman!
Good luck and enjoy your biking! I am trying to arrange to get down there to do the Brass Monkey with the Ullysees this year. Not sure if I will make it though....

What bike are you riding these days? We had a great time up in your neck of the woods earlier this year. In fact we thought Tauranga was reasonable place to imagine living when we fancy a change from Welly.

Re: What do people drive!!!
My OH is driving me batty..........
He keeps comparing prices of cars with those over here, and we thought the UK was expensive.
One of my main reasons for wanting to emigrate is to get away from the Mother mafia, 4x4 driving, its all about what you've got and where your going on holiday crap.
One of the recruiters in Auckland told me that no-one pays attention to what you drive, which is great.
My OH though has been looking at cars and is depressed that given the lower wages cars seem more expensive and financing seems expensive too. He's always had 'nice' cars cos he's really into driving (being a girl of course I'm only interested in the colour ). He says its not just the European brands its everything.
So tell me like it is, or is he right thinking we'll just be able to afford a tin can on wheels.

We're thinking of selling both our cars and buying a 4x4 over here, then putting it in the container when we go. As you know tax on 4x4's in UK has shot up and you will see a lot of them on forecourts, desperate to be sold.
Just an idea...
btw - Ive just sent you a pm
Cheers

Glad you liked the Bay of Plenty. There are certainly some good rides around the eastern side of the N Island. The next big one for me will be round the east cape to Gisborne. I've driven it in the car but I can't wait to do it on the bike!
What a bummer about the Brass Monkey. Ho hm...another year to wait...or maybe I will do some of the south isalnd in the summer and make it a sweaty monkey instead!
Have been into the Kiwibiker forum but not joined there yet. I must join up when i get the time...
Happy riding
