Not sure about online but we walked into the ASB, deposited money and got our eftpos card at the same time. All in under an hour. Sweet as!

We are with Westpac. We applied for our bank account in the UK at a NZ expo, so not sure about online. Got all our cards, chequebook etc as soon as we arrived. There's a large branch on Queen Street.

We are with National Bank and set up our account online with there immigration team. They sent us our account details 2 days later so we could start depositing money into the account if we wanted. Once we arrived we called them and arranged a meeting at the bank to pick up our cards and sort out any additional services we wanted.

National Bank do take longer than the other banks because they imprint your name on the ATM cards, unlike the others which have no name.

Okay you can probably expect one or two votes for each, rather than a unanimous response. So I'll start with a couple of pointers on some things that might sway your opinion.
Westpac bank clears money the old fashioned way, i.e you have to wait until the processing is done overnight before you see money in your account, even if it is from someone paying you from a Westpac Bank.
ASB clears you money instantly, say your salary or Trademe deals get paid from someone with an ASB Bank, you see the money in your account immediately. A good option if you've always run out of money by payday and your employer happens to bank with ASB.
Kiwibank is essentially the 'Post Office' and you know like every post office in the world there will be a queue of people posting parcels, paying bills, getting road tax etc and inevitably when you're in a hurry the queue is out of the door.
Probably a good idea to check out the bank charges too, some accounts offer flat rate fees. Westpac for example doesn't charge for electronic transactions but charges heavily for manual transactions, such as cheques or withdrawing money in the branch.

Thanks Shirl, Vitalstatistix, Seansueplustwo, Cappuccino, RobDon and BO for your reply.
i think [ and i need to be corrected by you if wrong ] that all the banks you mentioned are good, its just the choose of the right bank depend mostly on feedback from your friends. i agree that some banks cut more fees and others has more branches and ATM's but i belive that every country has one or two banks which almost have the highest number of recommendation over the others.
Thanks

Kimoloop I'm not in NZ so please don't take my opinion on this!
I rather like that Kiwibank has outlets in rural post offices (read that somewhere), is that an advantage worth considering when choosing a bank?
OH wants to go with HSBC as we have an account with them here.

We opened our National Bank account online in the UK and then popped into the branch when we arrived - showed ID and they sent a visa and EFTPOS card within a week. There were no charges to withdraw money at the branch during this time as we didn't have our cards yet (not sure if they charge normally though).
We like National Bank because they don't charge account fees if your salary goes into the account and you can withdraw money for free from National Bank and ANZ atms. I think most banks you mentioned will charge you for withdrawing money from other bank atms.
It may also pay to check which banks provide debit cards such as visa instead of EFTPOS as EFTPOS can't be used for online purchases.

Good choice!
I chose National bank cos I like the colour green Actually, I am really pleased with the service they offer and there is a branch really close to my office which makes it handy to pop in at lunchtime if I need to.
Some banks are open on Sundays which was a big surprise to me!

It might be worth mentioning that ANZ bought National a couple of years ago, so even if you open with National chances are you will be banking with ANZ in the medium term.
I have always banked with ANZ and found them to be ok.
