Default Western Springs Speedway Needs You!

Western Springs Speedway, which has been running since the 60s, will not happen again. That's your lot. Despite huge crowds flocking to this regular fixture (and a record crowd on Boxing Day '08), Auckland's mayor John Banks has made it his personal mission to stop this event. And he is intending to dig up the course over the winter, i.e. now.

Western Springs has been home to Auckland speedway for a generation, but the protests from local residents have prompted mayor Banks to use this as an excuse to show how tough he is. This is despite the fact that the residents (a handful) who are complaining bought their houses knowing full well that the speedway was a neighbour. The logical conclusion is that, if Banks gets his way, the music events at Western Springs will be next.

So, act NOW or it will not happen next season. You need to contact your MP to voice support. Alternatively, call the Murray Deaker show on Newstalk ZB and raise it with him - Murray is a huge fan and is apparently frustrated by the fact that no-one calls about this.

So there you are - use it or lose it folks. This is serious - we have a matter of weeks to save Western Springs Speedway otherwise we'll be travelling to Huntly to see this sport. And another great night out will be lost forever to Auckland familes.

Over to you.

I went earlier this year, very big crowd and a fantastic family atmosphere. incredible that they take the concerns of a few 'wowser' residents over thousands of peoples enjoyment.

There is Speedway in Waikaraka Park you know

However, rivalry apart, that's an absolute bummer! :curse: I thought all that crap was over and done with a couple of years ago when the locals got their pound of flesh. I'll write a letter!

What a shame, I grew up in Auckland, went to Seddon High (Now Western Springs) and was always at Speedway (and concerts there) as a teenager and loved it!
