Default Wellington short term accommodation

As I've mentioned on previous threads, I have now been offered a good-ish job in Wellington. They ideally want me to start in mid-April, so that's what we are desperately aiming for, visas allowing

Now the question I have is about short term accommodation when we arrive - does anyone have any suggestions?
We have been thinking along the lines of getting a furnished holiday rental for the first couple of weeks whilst we look for a more permanent 6 or 12 month rental.
Does this sound like a sensible plan? Have other people done this and do they have any tips?
If we get a holiday rental for a couple of weeks, do people think that it is likely that we would find decent(ish) long term rental within that time frame?

Any recommendations/advice/comments more than welcome, cheers!

Congratulations, all sounds great!

We rented a fully furnished and equipped holiday home for the first 6 weeks, by which time our container would then be arriving so we could go in to unfurnished - we actually bought after the 6 weeks though.

I felt it was an added expense that would relieve the stress a little. I couldn't bear the thought of camping with 6 of us and 2 big dogs whilst we sorted out where we wanted to be. But lots of people do and find it fine.

We found our place on Trade Me, try there, www.bookabach.co.nz and www.holidayhomes.co.nz as starting points.

Sounds sensible...

I got on trademe before we left the UK and sorted out some long term rentals to look at a coupl of days after we landed, so we only ended up in a lodge for 9 days in total before moving into a rental...

Hey, depending how many of you there are and how much you want to spend, there are plenty of serviced apartments around central Welly you could try for a few weeks, I stayed in one for about 3 weeks before I had sorted out a longer term rental. The likes of http://www.questapartments.co.nz/ have serveral properties around the CBD and there are others who offer the same kinda service, just Google them
