Good luck if you live in Wellington itself as the roads out will probably be closed, rail services may or may not be able to get you through the Rimutaka tunnel, the airport will be closed with immediate effect and every flight out would be booked within a couple of hours. The best option might be the ferry terminal but remember Wellingtons last big shake?
Wellington had just finished rebuilding after the 1848 Marlborough earthquake as well (rebuilding was much slower back then).
Why is it we never decentralised government services from Wellington? Do we prefer all our eggs in the one earthquake prone basket? It seems to me when there is a big shake in Wellington it’s curtains on the business of government for a few years.

The area that is now Basin Reserve was originally a lake (known as the Basin Lake), and there were plans to connect it to the sea by a canal to make it an alternative inner city harbour, with major warehouses and factories alongside it. However, the massive 1855 Wairarapa earthquake uplifted the area nearly 1.8 m and turned the lake into a swamp.
