Watties soups

Is there anyone out there like me, no matter how hard they try, cannot get to like the Watties soups.......they are vile!

Remember as a kid, playing out in the snow, your nose runs and it somehow ends up in your mouth?? Yuk..I know.......but..........

Try eating a tin of Watties Tomato soup and it'll bring you right back to those childhood days you hoped you'd forgot about....

Truly bl**dy disgusting!

Watties are a New Zealand institution. They were bought out by Heinz, hence the use of the Heinz logo (used to attract expats to buy it I thinnk). The Watties brands are NOT the same as Heinz and have thier own distinct NZ flavour. Anyone in the UK who would like to try Watties products can buy them from the New Zealand Shop ( can't remember exactly what it is called) in London. This shop can be found around the corner when you go to London to lodge your visa/residency documents.

Is it possible to get some cans of Watties outside NZ? I would like to try some. I guess Watties is to NZ what IrnBru is to Scotland, maybe. I know Londoners loved "rock salmon", I did when I was a Londoner ... up until I dissected one full of nematodes during a zoology practical ... I still remember the smell of that poor shark's innards, and I don't suppose it had access to a Watties supply of Immodium.

Each to his own huh? Simple answer is to learn to make homemade soup which is not only really easy, it tastes yummy & is also satisfying to know youve made it yourself. Other than that if you dont have the time for that why not order the english stuff online. Might be a bit expensive but would at least stop you remembering those nasty childhood memories:D
Watties isnt the only brands available in NZ so why not try some of the others. Heinz is available & not the one made by Watties. Doesnt seem to sell that well though because with Watties being a kiwi institution off brands dont seem to do that well:p

Re: Watties soups

As Gill & Rob said.....Watties have been bought out by Heinz and I am sure anyone who has been brought up with the Heinz brand will know its far superior to anything any other brand can put out......and certainly better than anything I can make! Mind you, too busy making money to keep paying bills to be making anything else! ;)

I'll just stop eating soup!!

Must admit, Watties does not taste as good as Heinz, the cream of Tomato has a weird tast to it here - not sure what it is - Maybe I'm just used to Heinz - you think they'd use the same receipes if they've been taken over hey??

ALso - the other thing I have noticed is Cadbury's chocolate - taste very very different here. Still nice - I love chocolate - but it still tastes different??

And - now that I am on a roll - Sausage here are awful, I am yet to find a sausage that tastes anywhere near as a good as a cheap sausage from the UK?? I love the meat here and the seafood, but sausages - yeugh, just vile. I no longer eat them - still try a new ones when I see one at a butchers etc on my travels that I have not tried. the best ones so far are from Pokeno, on the way to AKL, but although they are 'not bad' they're not a patchon the ones from home?? Its weird hey - we obviously tune our tastebuds to what we are used to, and then anything different tastes odd?? :D

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Marmite yet. My 5 year old lives on the stuff so should I bring a year's supply over with us? Shame the sausages are no good, as I was hoping that they would be like UK ones. I'm not a big fan of Spanish sausages and we regularly go to Gibraltar to get Walls bangers. Can you get Campbell's soups in NZ?

Not all that funny really. Anything with beef or that comes from beef extract etc is examined very closely to stop the threat of diseases like mad cow reaching our shores. Yes even good old Bovril has on occassions not been allowed in. Cant see how it can spread anything myself but they are the rules that MAF goes by.

Biddy your list keeps growing so bythe time you get to move to NZ hopefully you & yours will all have learnt to give up eating & drinking so the food & drink in NZ wont be a problem for you:D

NO READY BREK?! NO READY BREK?! They don't tell you that on the website do they! Oh no, it's all 'come and experience our culture, our proud Maori traditions, the scenery, the space, the lower crime rate, the personal safety, the no-nuclear weaponry policy, the fantastic extreme sports, the flora and fauna, yadda yadda yadda'. They never said they don't have Ready Brek! I love the stuff! I'm withdrawing the EOI.

Could we have some positivies please???

So we have to shop internationally for Marmite, Ready-Brek and Sausages what local foods can we look forward to?

There must be something from NZ that a Kiwi living in Uk misses

Bye for now,

Ermmm - you'd have to ask a kiwi?? OK, some of the things I like here:

Corned Beef - joints not the tinned stuff
Roll Ups (Pressed Fruit)
Burger Rings
Healthy Option Vegie Crisps (The Thai Flavour)
Watties Ketchup (I actually like it??)
All meat is good in general
Seafood - just FAB
My Edwards Cook Book - its great

Still miss me Ready Brek though - I LOVE it - hot and cold, plain and chocolate - can't even get a substitute here?? Praps we could start selling it here - and make a mint! As well as sausages :D

Urgh! Not cold Shellie, that's disgusting. Piping hot with honey in or maple syrup, or just hot enough to eat with chopped banana in. Always reminds me of being a kid - Mum used to make so thick it didn't move in the bowl, dish it out and then shout us all up, by which time it was stone cold and had a thick skin on cos she used plain milk. Whoever got to clean the pan got the worst job - it was always crusted.

If you put porridge oats in the food processor before cooking wouldn't that be the same as Ready Brek? I'll have a look at the ingredients next time I see a packet!

Matt wants to know what the milk is like in NZ because here in Spain it's mostly UHT stuff and he HATES it. You can sometimes get fresh milk, but he doesn't like that either and says it tastes different (thinks maybe because the grass is 'strange' here)!

Firstly might I ask exactly what is this Ready Brek you are all raving about??
Secondly I take it that was a typo error Shellie re the cook book were you referring to The Edmonds Cook Book?? IF so I agree it was one of the first things I packed when I moved away & for my first birthday away my sister sent me the new updated version. Also agree on the corned beef ( & corned silverside) I cooked some up over here the other day & it was rubbish compared to the stuff I used to cook at home.
Funny how we all get used to things though because the only so called real sausages I have been able to find over here are English or Irish bangers & I think they are awful. Miss my kiwi pork sausages something terrible but its just one of those things I will have to get used too or go without.
Am really curious about this brekky stuff though so hope you enlighten me soon:D

Evening All...I can't believe how big a thread about soup has grown!!!

To be fair Debs, Sunshine advised the turner family to ask a kiwi and at the last count Cindy is a kiwi and so is contributing as requested....fair enough methinks...;)

Oh and btw, whilst we are on the subject of UK products, please don't think that the lack of gravy granules is exclusive to NZ - my mate Carol emigrated to OZ a couple of weeks ago and she rang me the other day to give me an update on their progress...I asked her how the flight was and she said that she'd got talking to a couple of expats who'd just been home to the UK for a visit and she was asking them what they missed about home and they both said "Gravy Granules" which she found very confusing but I found quite hysterical....:D

Didn't see it.. sorry. Bye

Edit: How anyone can miss Kiwi Pork sausages is beyond a joke and thats why I insist on saying that this is a BRITISH forum to talk about BRITISH things... whether it be sausages (which in NZ are shite) or mountains (which in NZ are brilliant). I am so tired of constantly being put down by you so I shall bow out of here leaving you to police this thread & forum cos Im sure it will be better for others than have them see all this nasty sniping you so love to do whenever I post.

Debs, it may say British in the site's title but there are many people from all nationalities posting on this site - a lot of them are living somewhere other than their home country i.e. expats...

And the header for this NZ forum actually says :

With a climate similar to the UK, New Zealand is a popular destination for British Expats. Discuss living in New Zealand here.

So maybe we are at fault for discussing the UK when we should be discussing NZ - but then that would be ridiculous and I would be slated for splitting hairs if I were to suggest such a thing...see where I'm going with this Debs????

Cindy is a Kiwi and has lived in NZ for most of her life and therefore has a pretty good insight on NZ - but only her own personal experiences which not everyone will agree with but it would be wrong to say that she shouldn't post here - freedom of speech etc....and as I said before she wasn't butting in, someone suggested asking a Kiwi and Cindy replied - fair doos...;)
