Re: Watching the Cricket?
Its been a trend that the co-hosts meet in the Final
WC 2011 - India and SL met in the Final
WC 2015 - Australia and NZ meet in the Final
Applying the same logic...
WC 2019 - Who will England meet in the Final? Ireland or Wales?

Re: Watching the Cricket?
Mills might be in the squad but he's usually a opening bowler but he's hardily likely to displace Boult or Southee, plus he bowls at a slower pace that SA would love.
All of which seems to indicate Matt Henry might go straight in, having at least played recently (though that's hardily the fault of the other two), on the other hand he's yet to play a ODI at Eden Park with it's short boundaries.
The left of field choice would be to play another spinner, McCullum's brother, the back up spinner Nathan McCullum, which would also strengthen the batting further.
I reckon they'll probably go with McClenaghan who does at least take wickets, which goes much in with BMc's attacking strategies.
Hopefully it's a corker tomorrow, a with no rain and a NZ win. For all it's short boundaries, strangely the scores at Eden Park recently have been fairly low.

Not sure if they're likely to be any games in Ireland in the WC 2019, but if so and it's co host final, and England's recent decline continues still further, maybe it'll be Ireland v Scotland!

Well it's England & Wales Cricket Board, so I guess Wales won't be entering a team.

Re: Watching the Cricket?
Right so as far as I can work out:
- If they play his evening it will be a 20 overs game with NZ chasing 167.
- If the they play tomorrow SA will resume in the 39th over.
So NZ may get saved from SA batting here by rain and SA could be punished for that slow start.

Sorry, it's going to be 43 overs a side so SA will still have the bat for a short time.

Re: Watching the Cricket?
There where times tonight New Zealand would have taken a coin flip .
Matt Henry was fantastic wasn't he?
So India or Australia next, either way MCG so a very different wicket and long boundaries .

Re: Watching the Cricket?
Duminy cost South Africa the game. Had he left that catch to his team mate, Elliott is out - and highly unlikely Southee and Vettori would have seen them over. It would have been a complete choke had that happened, given their position - but not on the same wave length as the Americas cup choke.
It was a shame that rain interrupted the game. I'd have fancied them to chase down whatever score the South Africans posted. They probably would have got around 350 given the way they were batting. The wet ball wasn't helping them, Steyn wasn't 100% fit and the Des Walker look-a-like guaranteed you a boundary from at least one ball in his over
They have to hope now Australia beat India as the Indians will fancy smacking them round for a 400+ total if they bat first. Australia in the final as the hosts in their own backyard will be a lot more nervous than the current holders of the cup
But lastly, to Kiwi media - please watch the 1999 Semi Final between Australia and South Africa at Edgbaston. Then come back and tell me that you still think your match last night was the best world cup match ever.

Re: Watching the Cricket?
I couldn't watch the whole game last night because of the time difference between NZ and the Caribbean. But from what I did see, and from the game reports, it seemed that the NZ win owed more to just plain luck than anything else. And, as we all know, luck is an essential part of cricket. I think it was Napoleon who is supposed to have said, "God, send me generals who are lucky!"
Poor old SA just wasn't lucky enough. That fumbled run-out attempt by de Villiers - cripes!!!
May NZ be lucky in the final! McCullum does his best to make his own luck, I'll say that. I never thought I'd see five slips in an ODI - and outside the Power Play overs, at that. Whatta captain!

Lady luck on the batting wasn't on their side but I do think the Kiwis would have got to around 350 had they have 50 overs to do so. Not sure about Australia but I'd fancy India to score 370-400 against them at the MCG (hence hoping Australia get to the final). The Indian team have proved me wrong given their form leading up to the campaign - dare I say including a few defeats to the 1940s style one day kings. Plus the MCG is excellent for spin bowling, something the Indian cricket team are very good at.
It was those moments under pressure. 99% of the time, De Kock would have caught the ball and stumped Elliott out. Same with De Villiers and the Anderson missed run out. The big one for me was Duminy blocking their substitute fielder from catching Elliott. That would have been game over in my opinion. The South Africans certainly didn't choke like 2007 and 1999, it wasn't to be their night. It'll be their turn at Twickenham when they beat England 37-26 in the Rugby World Cup Final.
They won't change their plan of attack. McCullum is like Warner, slog slog slog. He can't play defensive, it's not his game. He'd never be accepted in an England team due to that method of play. New Zealands key player at the MCG will be Kane Williamson.

Re: Watching the Cricket?
Couldn't agree more with your synopsis on luck in ODIs. Hit the ball hard, run fast, bowl a length, hold your nerve chasing and hope the cricketing gods favour your team. Sadly it's not just the element of luck missing for England .
As for using 5 slips, you have to take risks to win. SA are a fantastic team, easily comparable to anyone else in quality of cricket so the differentiating factor between major teams often has to be strategy.
