Hi Chloe
I'm afraid I am in a completely different field of work so can't advise you specifically. However a quick google turned up this:
Barista - About the job
https://www.careers.govt.nz/jobs/hos...y/kitchenhand/
Bartender - About the job
I also ran $17 an hour through a PAYE calculator that I use to get a rough estimate for my paychecks and it has come back with a figure of $1139 per fortnight (most people are paid fortnightly in New Zealand) after tax.
You will find that bills, food and general living expenses are greater here than in the UK. There are a number of other threads on the forum which can give you an idea. Are you looking to live on your own or in a shared house as this would make a significant difference.

I strongly recommend sharing a flat at least to start with, you will cut down your living costs immensely.

Hey Fezz - it's this one:
PAYE Calculator | PAYE.net.nz
It's pretty accurate and you can add Kiwisaver in there too. It usually has my pay right to within a $20-30 range per fortnight.

Hi Fezz,
I've worked in hospitality in Christchurch. The wages sit around $16-18/hour for catering jobs. Check out Backpackers Board for jobs as they tend to have the hourly rate specified:
Backpacker Jobs & Work in New Zealand
That's where I applied for most of my jobs when I first arrived in NZ and needed some money coming in. Although just be aware that not all jobs pay you, they will want you to work in exchange for accommodation.
Good luck

Check out Jobs on SEEK - New Zealand's no.1 Employment, Career and Recruitment site too - heaps of jobs on there. You're coming at the right time of year for jobs. The tourist season is gearing up with summer just around the corner, there's usually heaps of backpacker jobs going. At least that's what I found down in Chch when we arrived in January a couple of years ago.

I'm sorry and I hope this doesn't sound rude but how can
someone come into the country and potentially gain residency
by doing any of these jobs. Surely there must be heaps of people
here capable of doing these jobs, its not like they are skilled trades.

it will be on a WHV, doubt very much they will be able to uplift a permanent visa unless they have mega bucks and want to open/run their own business
