Angry Visitors - Please take care

It applies to all of us I, but I thought I'd raise the fact that there seems to be just too many accidents around. Nearly every day there are details of a horror smash or a tragic accident on the roads around Bay of Plenty. It may be tourist forgetting to drive on the correct side; this has happened to me and is quite scary.

So watch out for driving while jet-lagged.

Beware of double length trucks, blind corners etc

Don't drink and drive.

Take frequent breaks.

Carry plenty of water.

Don't try to see everything NZ has to offer in one holiday.

It's better to get there late than not at all.

Watch out at roundabouts, loads of idiots forget to look right and ignore priority.

If in Tauranga, take care at all the traffic lights, I'm told drivers ignore the RED frequently

Every morning without fail I have UTE type vehicle nearly touching my bumper at high speed, the driver cannot wait to get in front, a few miles further down the single narrow road he stuck behind a logging truck or similar. So not just the tourist either!

Please add you own thought if you wish.

Rant over.

I personally really don't think it's tourists alone that are causing this, or even a little bit tbh.
I think most of us had to go through a huge load of lessons and tests to get our licences in the rest of the world.
I failed my UK test twice before I passed but I 'REALLY' knew my highway code when I finally got my licence.

We all know kiwis are poor drivers, I think rather than getting into a kiwi driver slanging match
snaps is just sending out a warning to new arrivals and visitors who are not used to the daily neglect
of the road rules that we residents see and have adjusted to

Accidents happen everywhere, I think it's good to sometimes have a little reminder of things that cause them though. If only one of us manages to alter someone else's behaviour through mentioning this thread then that has to be a good thing.

Best thing is to leave your car home. Better for the climate and better for clean air too. I always considered driving a car a 'monstrous' thing, a massive, fast steel construction to move a living little flesh clumb from A to B. If you drive a car, accidents will happen, and they could be caused by you because we all make mistakes. And if you crash this massive steel construction into a human being whatever the cause you can become a killer. So if you are into avoiding accidents and saving lifes sell your car

If only some had your way of thinking in the "car city" capital of the world

But don't worry Snaps, everything will be made safe by going 1kmh slower than usual FFS

At least one good bit of news came in today - the new drink driving rules. Even though I hope one day it'll become t-total for everyone, at least this is a start. The punishment should be more severe mind than a $200 fine and 50 demerit points, especially given some of the roads here.

On way home tonight I had 'a pusher' behind, tried overtaking on a blind corner, his brakes must have been red hot when he saw the truck bearing down on him before tucking in quietly behind me. Wish I could do without a car, but it's a 65 minute trip.

Ok but it would probably take me a day and a half to hike to Rangiora to catch a bus to Christchurch soooo not really an option for me.

Tom and ssky feel my pain

There's no public transport for me to get to work on time from Amberley

Wish there was. I'd feel an awful lot safer on a bus than in a car

In the last couple of weeks I've witnessed, rolled cars, overtaking on blind corners, U-turns across double lines and a car drive straight across the carriageway from one side to the other.

Serious crash, highway closed - Rotorua Daily Post - Rotorua Daily Post News
