Visa and tax liabilities

We came to NZ with a working holiday visa, and applied for residency in Sept (using an immigration lawyer who said we definitely fulfilled all the criteria) to keep our options open - unfortunately we couldn't settle and are heading home in June, and the residency still hasn't come through.
The WHV runs out on the 2nd April - I wondered if there was a more cost efficient way of extending this or if we need to push for the residency to go through so that we can carry on working through April and May?

Also we're self employed contractors, and wondered if any of you guys knew how it would work in terms of paying tax here over the 14 months we will have worked? Are there some breaks for people here for a short period of time?

Super grateful for any help or advice you can offer.
