No, lots come in on RoRo services, new cars no doubt are covered in protective stuff but not so personal imports...

Still seems OTT - surely they can't corrode that much?

Is it expensive to import a used car? I've always wanted an M3 CSL.

Unless you have one ready to buy today or your not moving for at least 12 months I wouldn't bother.

You need to own the vehicle for at least 12 months to avoid all import costs.

I imported a five year old Suzuki motorcyle last year: the brakes have to be stripped for inspection as there is a special form that the bike shop had to fill in, but the pads were standard and did not need changing. A typical example where they might need changing would be something like european high performance race pads - too many particulates.

You will have to pay the GST at the port - but everything else like the reg and brake check and wof can be done at your leisure. We were so busy moving in we left it about a month with the bike sitting in our garage until then.

We were talking corrosion not wear - do they swap pads on all new cars then? Where do "NZ compliant" pads come from - the NZ market isn´t big enough to have either seperate manufacturing for all pads for all cars to different NZ standards or even testing to some different NZ standard I wouldn´t have thought. Doesn´t seem to stack up any way you look at the brake issue...

Yep, and it must be prior to shipping date too (or your departure from the UK if earlier), so the time on the ship doesn´t count

Well NZ WOF standards aren't as strict as UK MOT. So I can't see how brake pads need to be any different!
I still have my original UK ones on and have passed many a WOF now!

It's the aftermarket pads that fail, original should be fine.

Good to hear - is there a fixed cost for the inspection though??

not sure about "fixed" cost but you do have to pay for an approved brake inspection, yes.
