Something of interest - certain airlines will only offer the 40kg if you go through certain agents
ie: Malaysia - Flight Centre
Cathay Pacific - Lotus Travel

Re: UK to NZ August 2010
I'm so gutted as I don't know what is happening with our plans now.
Basically our travel agent managed to get us 40 kg on Malaysian airlines (which was a prerequisite) - she got us a good price (not the cheapest flight but a good price).
Anyway on Friday - the tickets arrive and we get all excited again until we decided to phone the airlines to double check that some of my husband's specialist tools would be ok in our luggage.
Firstly the staff at Malaysian Airlines are without doubt the most rude and arrogant bunch of people I have ever had the mispleasure of having to deal with.
To cut a long story short - we don't have the 40kg - even though our agent specifically checked this and we are back down to 20kg per person. Seems that they've had a policy change in the last few days and we should now be paying a migrant fee instead of a normal fee. 20kg isn't going to work due because we need to take these tools so that my husband can start work and that our belongings will be in storage for about 6 months.
It's now turned into a massive thing between Malaysian airlines - who have slated the agent - and the agents who are demanding that Malaysian airlines honour their agreement or give us a full refund (due to the ticket being sold under false pretences).
As of Friday - nobody was budging and we have been quoted an extra £800 minimum to be able to get our 40kg.
As we are arriving in NZ on a very small budget, paying the extra money is not an option so please hold thumbs that the agents are going to be able to pull this together.
If they do decide to refund us - we are back at square 1 and looking for another flight
So basically - as much as our tickets are booked for the 29th - I don't know if we'll be making that flight
Here's hoping this is the last hurdle before we leave the UK

Re: UK to NZ August 2010
We're leaving on a jet plane - all sorted with our 40kg. Malaysian air backed down and gave us the allowance after a full refund was demanded
Our amazing agent, Rene, and all at Flight Centre have been wonderful and really fought hard on our behalf - am SO impressed with them
So we are flying out on the 29th August
Thanks for all your support
