UK - New Zealand... Here we come...?
Hello everyone,
We are a British couple who have just started the process to emigrate to New Zealand. Mrs is the one who will get the visa, being a special needs teacher. Mr will do whatever work comes along, being quite flexible and adaptable.
We explored USA a few years ago, that being our first choice, but found that without a US based relative, or $1000,000 we would only get a temporary work visa where Mr couldn't work and a stipulation was we would have to return to the country of origin for 2 years at the end of the visa term.
We also explored Australia and were a good way down the paperwork process when teaching was removed from the essential skills list, meaning Mrs no longer had enough points to apply for a visa.
We visited New Zealand last October on holiday and were bowled over with its beauty, and a small bit of research revealed that special needs teaching was on the essential skills list.
So, with renewed vigour, we decided to start the process off again, this time on our own rather than through an agent to save money.
In just over 6 weeks we have had the expression of interest accepted, and Mrs already has a job offer, the pace at which it is moving is astounding!
We are feeling really excited at the prospect of emigrating, something we have wanted to do for a number of years, to gain some work life balance back, some outdoor space and a healthier way of life.
Mrs is feeling a bit scared with the million questions, whereas Mr is plodding along in a cool calm collected manner, taking control of the essentials in terms of the paperwork.
Thank you in advance for the support, and we have already found the forum a weath of information, and we have only been visiting it for an hour or so!

You can print the forms for your ird number. That's Inland Revenue Department number, this is similar to your National Insurance number. Please look up NZ Inland Revenue Department online. You submit the completed form to the local post office in New Zealand. You are given a receipt which has your ird number on it.
You can get your NZ driving licence at the local branch of the AA in New Zealand if you have a valid UK license. Which is done there and then in exchange for a fee, a completed form, an on site sight test and they take your photo for the licence. You will be given a temporary nz driver license immediately. Your nz license will come in the post a couple of weeks later. You can keep your UK license.
Did you think the admin would be complete before you left the UK ?
