Yes, as the seller I think you should sign the form.

I sold a car in NZ for a mate who returned to the USA. I got a copy of his passport and a letter signed by him saying I was authorised to sell the car on his behalf..this really helped as it proved the car was not just being passed on by me who had just bought it.

This way its all above board and everyone knows the situation. DO KEEP IT Insured!!!! Mark's ran on his NZ motor until the day the chap drove it off my drive. Firstly if anything happens to it you are covered and secondly any test drives will be covered.

If there was no insurance on the car and the person driving it had no insurance your mate could be done for 'using' a vehicle on a public road with no valid insurance in force (I am ex plod and have some understanding of basic motoring offences...so keep it insured, your chum can claim for a refund on your behalf (he will need a signed letter from you again) from the ins. co. when its gone.

All clear?

All very well, but UK insurance is unlikely to cover any random driver who turns up for a test drive - a legal, fully insured test drive is actually quite difficult in the UK

One assumes that the OP has insurance that will cover a driver over 25 for the purposes of the test drive. I thought this was the norm for most UK insurance unless its a specialist car. Certainly all my UK insurance in the last 20 years covered any fully licensed driver over 25.

Not so sure. When I recently visited UK and borrowed a friend's car for a few weeks, he had to pay his insurer (direct line I think) an admin charge to have me allowed to drive

strange, oh i know why

you would have to have your own car insuerance , which would then cover you to drive any car .. i.e i could of drove my sisters in the uk but i would only have been covered 3rd party

sure thats how it works

Yes, I think that's right. So if the person test-driving has their own insurance, they will be legal to drive the car but compleely uncovered for any damage they might do. Not sure if I'd want some random person driving my car on that basis. In NZ, most car insurance is true "any driver" so you have full cover if you loan/borrow a car.

that's what I thought....BUT the AA demands that they are informed of the person intending to drive and that they have some idea of their driving record. They even sent me a new policy with my brother in law on it for just ONE DAY!! There was no charge for all that palava...and I think it was fully comp too.
