we left money in our bank account in the UK, any bills that need to be paid were paid from the UK account. We also ask family to put present money in the UK bank account and buy from here on their behalf. that way we always have money in the UK to buy presents and pay bills like credit card we hold there.

Not sure if you will be charged to pay direct or if you will pay for money transfer, sure someone else will be able to advise

I was under the impression that you could only hold a UK bank account if you lived there?

We have had a UK bank account with Barclays for donkeys years, with all sorts of addresses. Our bank cards are also with them. We transfer funds between UK and NZ regularly and have no trouble at all.

You'd struggle to open a new account from outside UK, but it's possible to keep them open, though the banks can make it difficult.

I found it impossible to keep my Nationwide Bank Account open (though had no problems keeping their credit card!) but had no issues with Barclays.

Had my Lloyds account with an Aussie address on it for 11 years now, they even send the new cards to me out here

OP - have a look at International Money Transfers - Low Fees, Great Rates - Send Money Overseas - i transfer money back monthly for uK credit cards etc, and I think they will deal with $NZ - much cheaper than using a bank to do your transfers.
