Re: Uk 2 Oz 2 Nz
Well well well, some interesting replies there, and thankyou very much they are much appreciated. There dose seem to be an undercurrent of negertivity running through the NZ forum, this at first struck me with a hint of alarm, but thinking back it is very similar to attitudes you find in the UK (no one can run down the UK like an Englishman) and I find that pleasantly reassuring.
With regards to culture, let me clarify, my personal view of Australian life is that is has a duel personality on the one side a traditional English influence and the other a rapidly growing American influence, particulaly prominent in QLD Culture
I am not just talking old buildings and bloody art galleries, but rather a population that can take the piss out of themselves and aren't on a mission to become the next USA.
Once again thanks for the comments and keep up the good forum
regards Hank

To the extent that NZ is influenced by overseas cultures, it is probably more British than American.
But like most small countries, kiwis try hard to have their own cultural identity, sometimes they succeed & sometimes they just follow the rest of the world.
Some other personal observations, just as when I think of what defines NZ I am not thinking of Auckland, the same goes for Australia, I do not think Perth or Gold Coast are very typical of that country.
Be careful of the weather too, you might say it gets too hot for you in Queensland, but I would imagine there would be quite a potential shock in moving from tropical climes to many places in NZ where the night time temps in particular can be surprisingly low.

I guess the grass is always greener. i have done the opposite, Uk> 9 years in NZ> 1 year in melbourne. Funny what some of you say you dislike about Aus. I agree it exists, but we are just so glad we moved. I don't think it is much less americanised in NZ , just poorer (or should that be americanized).
We watch motorway patrol from NZ over here, and it just reminds us of one of the main reasons why we left. I don't mean the driving especially, but the attitudes you see in the program. I could argue if you do something stupid, its cos you are stupid. There's a lot of stupid things happen in NZ.
I agree aussies are more arrogant and overtly more racist. Had some shocking experiences trying to get work here. It was much easier in NZ.
There's only one way to find out the truth though, you've got to try it yourself. one mans meat is another mans poison as they say.

Goodmorning/afternoon etc.
This is a little offbeat as questions to this forum go,but I am curious to see wether there are any British Expats out there that are living in NZ having come via Australia, myself and my wife and several children have lived on the Sunshine Coast QLD for 5 years and are contenplating our next adventure, as we are now Oz citizens the legal bit is relatively straight forward.

If you have acquired Australian professional or trade qualifications you may be able to benefit from mutual recognition in New Zealand.

Yes, I'd also choose the wet day in Sydney, having visited - there is more to do there (for me anyway).
I just felt that in NZ the people (a lot of them, not all) were almost anti cultural pursuits and there is actually a kind of inverted snobbery about them. I was often laughed at for wanting to visit a gallery or do something other than run about on the beach, or I got the response "ooooh, you're posh, aren't you?" (in a sarcastic tone).

He ripped the piss out of me (in good humour though to his credit)

Re: Uk 2 Oz 2 Nz
I'm into riding horses and NZ is better for that than Australia.
It's also better here for my dog and cat as I don't worry about the creepy crawlies here - because there aren't any.
When we came here from Australia, the immigration guy said, "Oh you're bucking the trend!" We had heard about the masses leaving NZ for Australia in search of better weather and wages so I wasn't too shocked.
We like some aspects of NZ.
The landscape in the NI is gentle and green but it rains a hell of a lot and it is a damp cold that seeps up your legs and gets into your bones. I think it is like Wales here in Winter - wet and grey. However on a sunny day the place is wonderful. Pity it's not more frequent. Winter was far too long last year. On March 2nd we had frost on our back deck. IT was thick enough to last all day! It seened to go on and on for about 6 weeks, brighten up a bit then more frost and fog! I've never had S.A.D. before but I think I get it here.
I have never met such welcoming people but I have also never met such a lot of people under mental health care. I'm sympathetic to this so don't judge me - luckily I have known a few friends with these issues before. Some say it's lack the magnesium in the soil. I found the Aussies rude in some ways but you knew where you stood from the start and I just gave it back. The sense of humour over in NZ is more like the UK humour. The Aussies are more 'american' but we get there in the end.
I think when you get out in 'woop woop' here it's not as rough-looking as when you go out further afield in Australia. I think the properties generaly look tidier here and, of course, they have hedgerows and greener grass here (N.I.) so it's softer on your 'mince pies'.
It can feel tedious here for some reason and I completely agree with Nerine's post. Sydney, for instance, is great. I'm not a city dweller and I do not like the suburbs in Australia that have that Stepford Wives/cloned and your brain's ours feel but Sydney (for a city has it in spades - scenery, so much to do).
I don't have a lot of confidence in the health system here. Everything looks so clapped out! Just the other day they ran out of adrenalin! And they're trying to buy anti depressants cheaper and it will save somethign like 1 billion dolalrs a year! Blimey how many are on them?
Australia, having a larger population, has more specialists so it makes you feel safer somehow. Having said that hospital care is free (like the NHS) but the hospital I visited a friend in recently was filthy and depressing. Good bit was it had radiators though. Never thought I'd covet a 1950's school lookalike chunky radiator! The person I visited had heart trouble and says they were great so that's good. So maybe all that glitters (in Oz) is not gold!
I think because I like horses, animals etc. NZ is so much easier for me personally but if it's a good wage you are after or a career move then this is not the place. My husband has foundthe working environment to be stifling and backwards to the point of frustration. So much so he starts a job next month in Sydney.
Nerine was spot on about the politics - they do navel gaze here. At least in Oz they seem proactive and do, indeed, act! It is american there though and can seem souless. I find I 'click' with the scenery here and feel comfortable here (though a tad dulled down) but I still am an Australia addict. Once that place takes hold it's hard to kick the bitch out of your bed!
If we had listened to people who told us not to come here then it would have made nto difference because my husband had and itch he wanted to scratch and that itch (after Australia) was NZ. That's life I suppose.
To sum up, after Oz it seems
Cold (damn cold)
Grey
Poorer
but
Friendly people
Rural and towns mixed (more like the UK)
Better for the pets in spades
So if you like it here it woudl seem you just need lots of money and a nice warm house!
