Two things please....

Two things please....
can anyone point me in the direction of any threads along the lines of "what do you wish you had taken and what should you have left behind"? and I don't mean kids!!!
second thing....we're heading Wellington way later on this year. ITA in progress so hopefully get visas mid year. I've met a few people on the net as I was anxious that I'd be lonely as I won't be working and have a great group of friends here....now got four new Welly based mates to look forward to meeting. But now OH is saying he's worried about settling in cos he'll be working all the time and won't be able to make mates. I don't think he's that bad really!
He's in IT so have been trying to persuade him to sign up to the Wellies thingy and he also does a lot of karate. I take it that there are groups in Wellington area too.
Gosh....what a lot of warbling to ask two simple things - what do we not need to bring and will anyone be our mates?!

yep, bring everything. Or at least, as much as you can get in your container. Your hubby shouldn't have any problems making friends if he's going to be working - don't expect to make instant 'best friends' and just take it all as it comes but if you've already got the 'girls' then you'll have a ready made social circle anyway. I was the same when I got here and the people I'd met on the forum really eased the way for me and my hubby.

Re: Two things please....
1. Bring everything
2. IT in Welly is quite a clique... a bit "6 degrees of separation"- like, or maybe fewer degrees.
Does he have a job lined up? (sorry can't remember!) What does he do? I work in a very niche sector in IT and there aren't many of us that do what I do, in Wellington.
Definitely join the Wellies, but remember they only meet once a month.
The expat community here is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!! I am SO at home here and have some of the best friends I've ever had in my whole life, right here on our doorstep. I couldn't imagine my life here without my fellow expat friends.
I also need to say that some of my best friends are my colleagues. It's such a relaxed atmosphere, people socialise together, it really is great.
OK sorry but must run... have to get ready for the party.

OH is a Business Support Manager -does technical and non-technical support in a multi-vendor repairer/warehousing/logistics support type of thingy! Hoping that they are pretty transferrable skills.
Thanks for advice.

I just googled 'Wellington karate' and several links came up. Clubs for most leisure pursuits seem to exist here.
Good luck with all research.
