Travel insurance and more
Hi All,
New member here. We've finally got our residence visas and have booked our flights to NZ . However, we're stuggling finding information about appropriate insurance for our journey and the first couple of weeks after we arrive. We're hoping to go straight into rented accomodation, but may end up in a motel/holiday park for a couple of weeks first.
We've found a couple of one-way insurance policies that will cover for up to 17 days (thanks to a forum search we've phoned the PO for a quote), but our problem is the level of cover for our belongings. We will be bringing as much stuff as we can to last until our container arrives (we have 2 children under 2 so need a lot of stuff, therefore flying via LAX to get the max luggage allowance) but the limit on the policies, particulary the single item limits, are far too low for our needs. For example, all of the shipping quotes we've had say they won't insure jewellery so we have to carry it with us. I have one family heirloom that is worth over any limits the insurance will allow, even our laptop will be worth more than the single item limits allow - anyone know how we would go about insuring things like these until we get contents insurance in NZ.
Thanks for any help with this. We've spent hours searching the net and are at a loss.
Cheers,
Beth and Rob

Sorry can't help you - but would be really interested if you can tell me who you've been able to get the quotes for insurance from as we have just started looking and I'll obviously be keen to read any advice that's forthcoming from your original post.
Thanks!
Thanks!

If you have an address to go to can't you arrange for a private shipper to ship them by air for you, they'll surely have special insurance for jewellery and laptops etc?

Re: Travel insurance and more
Also what happens if we end up in temp accommodation beyond our travel insurance period - both companies I've looked at (the Post Office and http://www.go-walkabout.co.uk/emigrating.php ScottyD) will only cover for up to 17 days, so with travelling that only gives about 2 weeks cover after arrival. If we happen to have still not moved into a rental property (where we can obviously get contents insurance), what are the options for insuring our belongings while in temporary accommodation?
It's all so confusing!

temporary accommodation contents insurance
Try here, they also might do a combined travel insurance as well

Re: Travel insurance and more
At last, I've found something suitable!
Thanks for the suggestions Julesnye, they gave me some ideas for new search terms to use and I tried Google.co.nz instead of uk. Unfortunately the aa one that mentioned temporary accommodation was for provision of such if your property became unlivable in. I emailed them anyway in case they could help, but they couldn't (at least they replied!).
However, I came accross another NZ company that provides insurance for just the situation I was looking for, plus they have an individual item limit of $2500 (as opposed to the £300 that the UK companies offered), so that covers the laptop. You can also obtain extra insurance for specified items up to a value of $10,000. They cover your belongings from your home country travelling to NZ and have prices for policies from 8 days to 14 months which should cover finding somewhere to rent! All of the details can be found from this link:

They were very helpful in their email and got back to me promptly which is promising. Hopefully this info will be of use to others emigrating. Has anyone heard of these people or used them before?
Cheers,
Beth
