Question Transporting a computer to NZ?

Me and my girlfriend are about to move to Wellington. We're not calling it emigrating, but it is a semi-permanent move, for at least a couple of years.

We're toying with the idea of not bothering with shipping options, just taking everything that we want to take in excess luggage and managing without/buying the rest.

Anyway, even if that is a good idea, I need to find a way to get my Mac to NZ. I've been told that checking it as 'hand luggage' is not an option. I really don't want to check it in the hold.

Does anyone have experience of couriering a computer to NZ? Or have recommendations for air-cargo companies that would pick up in London and deliver to Wellington? Is it insanely expensive?

If I sound unprepared, that's because I am! Any advice/constructive criticism most welcome!

Take the hard drive(s) out and hand luggage those, pack the chassis in a suitcase among clothes as padding....should be all fine.

Have you not still got all the packaging it came in? If it got to the UK from China in one piece it will be fine in the hold. When flying out of the Middle East everyone and their dog were transporting big tv's in the hold.
Obviously you need to have insurance and a full time machine back up that includes media and your whole user, home, applications, library folder etc. I've restored from time machine several times with no problems.
At the end of the day I can't see sending it 'air cargo' is going to be any better than taking it to the airport with you.
Good luck, whatever you decide.

hubby took all the hard drives out a and carried in his many pockets in the many layers he wore whilst travelling over. he also carried the Wii in his pockets. Not the balance board though that would of been ridiculous
He did go a bit OTT on getting clothes with lots of deep pockets and layers he wore but made him happy to have the things he wanted on his person
