Tipple of choice
After 3 years I'm still to find a decent beer here in NZ.
Everything I've tried is a lager depsite it being called beer.
Back in Blighty My tipple of choice was John Smiths (Top Bombing) a proper English bitter.
So who's got a suggestion of something a bit more satisfying than the cold fizz usually on offer??

Re: Tipple of choice
I know I can get boddies and several "proper" beers down at speakers corner in Browns Bay
but I'm after something I can drink when I go to any bar, something I dont have to travell miles to get.
I could turn to wine but it turns me into a happy drunk in no time at all and usually give the mother of all hangovers

from Mr BEVS:
..........long, looonnnggg - silence...........
& then
...some of the 'boutique beers up at The Moutere Inn are OK and maybe The Mussel Inn stuff. = The Dark Horse.
In general ? Nah . I'm not overly enthralled with the mass produced beers but some of the smaller independent breweries do some good stuff at a price. So I stick to the cider.

Now we are talking, mixed 50/50 with tequila.
Justcol
Marlborough has three excellent breweries
No 8 Wired (brewer of the year)
Renaissance Brewery (brewer of the year 2010)
Moa Brewery
All should have national distribution and are well worth checking out.

Emersons Bookbinder, mmmmm
I decided when I arrived that I wouldn't drink any non-NZ beer or wine for a year as it must be possible to drink local. 11 months in & not missed anything so far...

Is Galbraiths Ale House still Open?
I haven't lived in NZ for the last 8 years, so I don't know.
If it is still open, i suggest you head on down there. it's a homebrew pub that produces proper English real Ale.
Google it and go there....you will not be disappointed!

Re: Tipple of choice
I was told of a newish pub in Auckland acouple of weeks ago called Spitting Feathers on Wyndam st. They are reputed to be importing real ale (not the keg crap) from the UK. I haven`t tried it yet, it takes planning and sober drivers to get home to Hamilton! Try The Beer Store in Hamilton, mail order beer from all over the world, not cheap but interesting. There are some good beers out there but like good oats they come at a price, oats (and beer) that have already passed through the horse are cheaper. Must agree about Galbraith`s, good beer and food.
