Re: Tike Tanne
Surely not as boring as the truckloads of depressing clangy guitar music that has come out of Northern Britain and is for some reason considered brilliant by a lot of Brits? Morrissey & The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Oasis, Stone Roses etc.
And the tedium which is the modern day British pop charts (although top 40 charts have always been full of dross)
The NZ music scene is what it is, a bit quirky, pretty independent, non-commercial and most people are never going to get rich out of it. And I see nothing wrong with using the Maori heritage and don't quite get the comparisons to Morris dancers or that fact that it is all the same. Country Music in the US is all the same but still manages to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sector of the music industry over there.
Though I will admit I get annoyed at the bandwagon of wearing black, ferns and everyone doing hakas that seems to be getting pretty corporate these days.

Not only Brits, Kiwi's too. New Order recently came to NZ and Morrissey is playing here shortly. And Joy Division is always sounding out from the HiFi at work by the Kiwi lads in the print room and so is Stone Roses.
It's not a bad thing Kiwi's aren't too successful at music, let's face it most young people in NZ are out surfing, fishing and playing sports, back in blightly most of the time it's too cold to be outside doing anything so youngsters stay in and play music. If Ian Curtis had have grown up around here he'd have probably been a rugby playing V8 loving proper kiwi bloke that likes drink driving and talking about blokey stuff like DIY.
Kiwi's just don't do music, comedy or TV very well. But I still love it here.

Oh ... Radiohead!
I love Radiohead. As far as music is concerned the UK is where it's at.
60's Beatles, Zombies, Hollies, Searchers, Manfred Mann, Dusty Springfield (Never a big fan of The Stones though)
70's Badfinger, The Who, Wings, David Bowie, ELO, 10cc
80's Kate Bush, Joe Jackson, Police, XTC, The Cure, Undertones (Irish I think), The Clash, The Jam, Talk Talk, Close Lobsters
90's Radiohead, The Verve, Shack, Kitchens of Distinction, Ride, Slowdive
2000's ... um ... downhill ...
The only NZ acts that can compete with those are The Bats and Crowded House IMHO.

Well the truth is that no country can really compare to the UK and US in terms of music quality and originality - as the driving force of culture etc. I'm just saying that it depends on what genres you like and that the US/UK produce some pretty boring stuff too, partly because foreigners were probably brought up in different circumstances and don't quite get it.
