Tike Tanne

What a performer! He was at Kate's work yesterday for a private audience before he does a gig in aid of a Charity locally. Lovely man, extraordinairily gifted and very, very kind..and Green too!! 'No fracking NZ' all over his guitar!! Gifted one of his songs to Starship so they get all the royalties. Off to buy his CDs ASAP!!!! I was in awe to be in his company, a really great moment in my life!!! I don't normally get off on stars!!!!!

Tiki Taane, is IMO is musical genius, able to cross different styles, great producer and family man.

His early work with Salmonella Dub is legendary and a good place to start.

Thanks for correcting his name for me....don't trust 'google' with spelling!!! Or me!! He also came over as very normal, unaffected by his fame and as a really, kind, gentle, wonderful person.

His voice is to die for. He has a beautiful spoken voice too.

Doesn't anyone else get bored of seeing Kiwi artists and the usual Haka, tattoos and Maori stuff going on, as someone that was heavily involved with the music scene in the UK I always find it cringeworthy and it seems the Kiwi's are starting to aswell (link below). If you've ever seen the film 'Get Him to the Greek' you'll have heard/seen the song that Russell Brand sings called African Child, it kind of reminds me of that.

Maybe it's the reason Kiwi music doesn't ever seem to make it abroad. Can you imagine if all the bands/artists at home had images of morris dancers, robin hoods merry men and roman soldiers prancing about in the background.

:) starting to ???? how long have you lived in NZ ?

I hope you never have any say in the live music at the NZ MAORI music awards.

A sanitised version of real music from the likes of Muse etc is what we get.

You really do need to do some research at how well Kiwi musicians have done overseas over the years.

Real music comes from the heart and is a soul expression or it was until it was bastardised by the mighty dollar.

Re: Tike Tanne

I was at a Katchafire concert a few years ago in Blenheim and had a beer with the band during the interval.

I like the fact to be musician in NZ, you can forget fame and fortune. It makes everything more accessible.

Over the years we have collected a lot of NZ music and play it regularly, from Anika Moa, Bic Runga, through to the BBQ reggae bands, Shapeshifter and Concord Dawn for Drum N Bass, Hip Hop by David Dallas and Che Fu, electronica by Pitch Black and Minuit, to name but a few.

There is a lot going on, not a lot of it is commercialised.

Long may it continue.

I made it part of my acculturation to only buy kiwi music in the first year or two.
My husband was at Otago so got me acclimatised to flying nun at an early stage.
Also got taken to lot and lots of bands.
It worked.
My first gig was Shihad as I had to understand NZ rock, apparently, the Hallelujah Picassos for the best live band in Auckland

Tiki was one of the first too, I seemed to follow Salmonella dub around for a while.

He's such an icon now...love him

That's fine, if we all liked the same things, there would not be much to talk about on BE.

Surely not as boring as the truckloads of depressing clangy guitar music that has come out of Northern Britain and is for some reason considered brilliant by a lot of Brits? Morrissey & The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Oasis, Stone Roses etc.

And the tedium which is the modern day British pop charts (although top 40 charts have always been full of dross)

The NZ music scene is what it is, a bit quirky, pretty independent, non-commercial and most people are never going to get rich out of it. And I see nothing wrong with using the Maori heritage and don't quite get the comparisons to Morris dancers or that fact that it is all the same. Country Music in the US is all the same but still manages to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sector of the music industry over there.

Though I will admit I get annoyed at the bandwagon of wearing black, ferns and everyone doing hakas that seems to be getting pretty corporate these days.
