FWIW it's the same for us. We're not on our uppers but one certainly has to watch all the pennies & that makes for a restricted life.
As you will see I've moved the post to a thread of it's own. Just felt it was a matter of fair play that those enjoying their NZ lives be allowed to express it freely without a damp squib being thrown in.
Things you would never have done before you got to NZ
Budgeted for one tank of petrol a week.
Paid $2 for a bag of horse manure

Gosh, when I think about it there's heaps!
Pay a small fortune for a wooden home with no serious heating
End up with kids who don't share our cultural background or really know their wider family
Find we're only really comfortable swimming where there's lifeguards due to the rips and currents, etc, from being sea swimming keeners in the UK
Spend every holiday either in Oz or Britain with family- really miss France and feel sad that my kids will never feel the familiarity with it we had
Drive such a massive car with a larger than 1.3l engine- ugh
Drive ****** everywhere!
Get bitten to heck by stripey mozzies everytime I go in the garden in summer.

Get Sick of tons off flies in summer.
Moved my children from England for a better life but not quite worked out as eldest has never settled hates it and can't get a job.
Not been on a proper Holiday since living here just back to the UK and Christchurch for a week.
Miss going to a theme park.
Getting dressed up with nowhere to go.
Living somewhere with dull kiwis
.
Oh and living somewhere where everyone is so easily pleased

P18PPS. Lucky you.
There's plenty of people that couldn't get work years ago, regardless of desire. I've certainly been poorer and colder than I am here.

Though I have been made redundant twice in the UK, it's never happened here, however the financial quality of life in NZ is far lower than that of the UK, and with 4 children it is definitely a problematic issue.... you can rant on about the quality of life over here for kids - which is fantastic - however we have reached our peak and are moving on....
good luck to those that live it out! we shall be back no doubt at some point in the future, but "greener" (??!) pastures call for the immediate future.
