We just have the earthquake fault lines in Wellington...we leave the volcanoes to central North Island 4-5 hours drive away(Tongariro National Park and then Taupo.....Rotorua).
Wellington is a very compact city, you said on another thread you will have 7 days..that is enough time to see virtually all its attractions (Botanical gardens and cable car, Waterfront and Te Papa, Zoo, Lambton Quay shops, Thorndon, Brooklyn Wind Turbine, Mount Victoria Lookout, Oriental Bay, Petone, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt shopping centre) so having exhausted it, you will then be able to choose to go and settle somewhere else!
Wellington is quite remote from other places although you can drive out in roughly two directions: Kapiti coast or Hutt Valley and then over the mountain to the Wairapa (lots of farms and not much else there, a couple of sweet towns like Greytown and some would say Martinborough or even Masterton).
You can also spend half an hour driving round the Eastern Miramar peninsula on the airport side of Wellington and half an hour driving out beyond Karori to Makara Beach but these really are the only directions possible, unless you take a ferry to South Island.
