There are PROPER bangers in New Zealand!
No, not the local boys in their Holdens and Fords...
While in Sydney for two years (2002-04) tried at least a dozen different types of sausages, and could never find one that came close to the Great British Banger. However, since arriving in NZ I thought I'd better give it a try. I went into Woolies, and got some 'London Pride' sausages. Came back, fried them up, and had them as 'dog rolls' with some HP sauce. YUM!!! SO, anyone heading out here from the UK, don't worry about your bangers - they're here!!

Have to admit, though, that the warmer climate does not seem to suit such food (tucker) - over the years (in Wellington), we eat much lighter food - more salads, seafood - only in NZ would lobster be called "crayfish" - less carbohydate stodge - our American visitors can't believe that we buy green-lipped mussels for less than $4/kilo!

For anybody who is in Auckland and suffering from withdrawal symptoms for "proper" sausages try Jansens butchers in Browns Bay. Massive selection of different stuff and yummy pork chipolatas.

Also, I just wanted to say that I'm sure that there are specialist sausage makers all over NZ. The initial point I wanted to make was to let newbies know that you can get 'proper' sausages anywhere in NZ, at Woolies. Unlike Oz, where you DO need a specialist sausage maker, it seems, if you prefer 'bangers' to 'snags'!

Re: There are PROPER bangers in New Zealand!
We also buy those London Pride sausages. Good taste and a meaty banger, which needs no added cheese.
Still on the search for a decent unsmoked rasher or even a lonesome piece of gammon. Still can't get it , after nearly two years of being here. Never have liked the taste of any smoked meat, with the exception of smoked salmon and the odd kipper.
We have been told we need to find a butcher which will have 'green' bacon. Yet to find one.

I think i'm in the minority here! But I really like all the sausages from the butchers - I never liked what are considered bangers - are they the pink yuchy looking things?
Also bacon - love it thin, crispy and streaky so bacon here - the beehive stuff is absolutely perfect!!
