Is there bird watching in New Zealand?

Arrived in NZ (Whangarei) a few weeks ago. Dissappointed there are no footpaths like the UK for walking and bird watching (dogs missing out too!). Always been a keen bird watcher, member of RSPB, BTO etc, but there seems nothing of the same out here. Very frustrating. Do New Zealanders go bird watching, any clubs etc?

That's the best site I've found too, Avid. Also on the kids' area they have a PDF 3-page story you can print out: Kiri Kiwi & Willie Weka: The Stolen Eggs :)

Most NZers who do bird watching do it as a sort of add on to tramping - you would tend to find a good walk, or kayak, or mountain bike route, and if you remember to throw in your bins all the better.

Apart from seabirds, there are not a huge range of birds to id, and after a couple of years you might tend not to even take a pocket guide with you.

NZers do birdwatch and yes Forest and Bird is the 'sister' organisation to RSPB. Though they do have some different aims etc if you contact the secretary for the branch in your local area as they may be able to help you (their main offices can't as they are mainly for advocacy & political stuff).

I would also suggest contacting DoC www.doc.govt.nz for information on your local area.
