Does anyone happen to have a web address that will let me check the distance from a property to the nearest exchange?
Im trying to work out likely speed of broadband at a new rental.

Distance to the exchange is not the only factor determining Broadband speed. The type of broadband, and the contruction of the cable (thickness of the copper, number of joints, number and type of cross connection points, number of repairs). Also remember that it is cable distance to the exchange not road distance or 'as the crow flies'.

Your absolutely right wooley,but you try find out what speed you can expect to receive from a potential provider and your a better man than I!
The best there is, as far as I can tell, is the exchange distance-and even that may not help if your provider has their own infrastructure!
Oh well, perhaps one day, the consumer may be king!

Because of the complex factors I have mentioned no provider (either here or the UK) will guarentee a speed. Most will also not tell you what the contention ratio is. All will quote something but subject to individual circumstances, and testing.

Telecom's site does let you know if broadband is roughly possible in your area/for your phone number.
But it also says this:
Telecom Broadband is available in your area. Please note that factors such as distance from our equipment or the network's capacity means we may be unable to deliver Telecom Broadband to a specific address.

I suspect that will be a catch phrase many would use. Be aware that if you move into a new subdivision this could be a particular problem. In fact, could should really be "should".
Weirdly, it's also a problem in about 3 streets in Mt Victoria just off Marjoribanks street.
Telecom also has it's new hightechspeedysuper connections which they are installing throughout the country. Still, that's going to be a while.
