Teaching Engineering in NZ
I am a time served indentured mechanical engineer with over 15 years in this industry. For the last 4 years i Lecture full time at our local college teaching 1st year apprentices the basic skills required to be a mechanical engineer( I have completed my PTLLS and CTLLS quals to enable me to teach ). I am really interested in moving to NZ but do i go down the college lecturer route or mechanical engineer route ?? Any help much appreciated

Re: Teaching Engineering in NZ
If you want to be a college lecturer you would have to wait for a vacancy to be advertised. You may need a degree in Mech Eng and if you want to teach at the polys or Unis here you would probably need a PhD.
There do seem to be quite a lot of engineer jobs about here though e.g. here Jan |
Re: Teaching Engineering in NZ
i would go the engineer route.
more jobs available depending on skills. you might want to look at the dept of corrections. they often look for guys like you but i dont know if it helps with visa's. still worth a look though |
Re: Teaching Engineering in NZ
If you do a search for engineering jobs for the whole of New Zealand you'll find between 600 & 700.
But you will probably find most are for civil, architectural or electrical engineers. Mechanical engineering jobs are pretty scarce at the moment in most areas & when they do come up they attract 100's of applicants. It really does amaze me how much teaching of Mechanical engineering & encouragement to go into engineering there is in a country where there isn't really much of an industrial base to start with. For example, there are loads of courses around where we are for Mech eng. & Cad, Solid Works etc. but there hasn't been any jobs advertised in these fields since November:thumbdown: Last one I applied for was a Mechanical Design Engineer, which I found out about through a person who worked there. They had nearly 250 applicants apparantly & in the end it went to someone they had in line anyway, they did not even interview!!! Based on my experiences I would go down the teaching route, either college or school. |
