Teachers in NZ
 

Hi

I have noticed while trawling through the lists that we do not seem to get many (any actually) horror stories from teachers. Does this mean that teachers earn good money and don't suffer the hardships we read about on this site? Or are they too busy to notice? I shall be finding out a lot more about teaching in NZ on Friday at the TeachNZ stand at the Emigrate exhibition in Surrey. I shall, of course, share the info here. I am aiming at teaching secondary science with physics as my subject specialisation.

It would be very good to hear from any teachers out there about their experiences good and bad, particulary any recent recruits.

PS. I'd also be interested to hear from any librarians, are you expected to be chartered to work in nz, is it easy to find work over there etc... any info would be greatly appreciated. Particularly interested in the Christchurch area.

Funnily enough.. I know of someone who posts on another forum who worked as a librarian in the BOP and now works as a teacher!! (she did the librarian work until she found a teaching job). I will ask her to read this thread hey?

Not sure what she teaches though!

Thanks for the responses so far folks. I have checked teaching websites, recruitment, the education gazette etc. I am very interested to hear personal accounts of the teaching experience in NZ. There is nothing quite like the everyday sagas of personal experience. One of the reasons we find this forum so interesting! It tells the stories from a personal perspective 'warts and all'. Facts and figures are fine as a framework but real stories are what offer a proper perspective and remove the rosies.

Went to see teachNZ at the emigrate exhibition today. It seems as if I fit into some area of great need. They seem very keen to get me over there. I spoke to the Oasis teaching agency and they said I could get over easily by July. In the interests of common sense and thorough planning, however, we will aim to go at the start of 2006. The Emigrate exhibition is very useful for anyone intending to have a go at 'the great adventure' and runs tomorrow (Sat) and sunday at sandown racecourse & ehibition centre in Epsom, Surry. They have seminars about the emigration process etc. which may be very useful and loads of employment agencies and emigration agents. If you can't make that then they are also holding events at Birmingham 22/3 & 23/3, Liverpool 29/3 &30/3, Edinburgh 31/3 & 1/4, an Dublin 3/4 &4/4.

The event is not just for NZ but for many other destinations. The event is being run by Outbound Publishing and they have a URL www.outboundpublishing.com.

Correction

Hmm both urls go to the same place!!!

Also the emigrate exhibition is only at the Sandown centre and not at all the other venues. It is only TeachNZ who are holding seminars around the country

Hi my friend (the ones Debs has spoken about) is an English Teacher.

Librarians get quite good money in NZ - I think she got about $16 an hour.
