Takapuna medical centre / Drs surgery
Hi, can anyone recommend a medical centre / GP in or near Takapuna? We've just rented a place in the area, and I find myself needing to visit the Dr.
Also I understand that I will be charged for GP appointments, but I havent really been able to figure out what else, other than prescriptions you need to pay for here. I have a 2 year work visa which I think gives me some entitlements to healthcare but i'm just a bit worried that if I need treatment or disgostic tests what the potential cost will be. Should I be getting private healthcare / health insurance?
Any advice much appreciated.

Not sure how the system would work for someone with a 2 year work visa but this is my experience as a NZ citizen.
NZ has a sort of bob each-way health service. There is a public health service and a private one.
Public :
If you need to be referred for specialist treatment it is generally free. If you have a life threatening condition you can (generally) get in as soon as possible, but you also have to place faith in whoever is assessing your condition. If not life threatening you could be waiting a very long time for an appointment, sometimes up to 2 years.
Private :
Can get in as soon as possible (generally) except if there is a shortage of specialists in that field in your area. But you have to pay. Half hour appointment would be in the $100-$150 range, and that's just for the consultation.
My advice : Take out health insurance, in which case you can get in as soon as possible and have most of it paid for by the insurance company.

I agree with wiakotoguy. Talk to an insurance broker to find the right medical cover for you.
As for a Doctor, I originally registered with the surgery at Hauraki on Lake Road.

The way it's going in the UK it's not even as good as a shitty 2nd class service!

thanks everyone. the biggest fear i had was getting diagnosed with something and then having huge treatment bills. would still like recommendations if anyone has any for a good place to register.
