Wink IT / System Equiry...

Hi, can anyone tell us what's big in NZ with regards to the IT Computer systems companies use ? I hear and read that Novell is still used quite a lot on in Aus/NZ....for anyone working in the IT industry in NZ - is this correct ?

Are Vmware, Exchange, SAN's etc all the rage ?

Any information would be greatly received...

Many thanks

Si

Hmm I'm not sure... The area I'm in is very specialised. Take a peek on seek.co.nz and that might give you more of an idea. (sorry!)

Three of the big IT companies in Wellington are Gen-i, Datacom and Fujitsu. have a look at their websites and see what services they sell...

Hi Si,

Most streams are popular in IT in NZ.

VMware is very popular, Windows servers, Exchange, SQL, Oracle, Cisco, etc. Some of the big companies in Auckland are Gen-i, Simpl, EDS, Intergen.

What type of work are you in, skills, etc?

I think there is a perception that IT lags behind in Australia/NZ compared to the UK. I've found that not to be the case after working in Sydney and now Auckland.

If by using Novell you a refering to Novell Netware then I don't think you'll find too many places still using that...

Yeah, but I guess if you did that same search on jobserve.co.uk you'd probably get proportional results back for mainly roles that involved looking after legacy systems, so I wouldn't say it's any more popular here.

Hi Si,

Yes I am in IT Management and have a number of people working for me, it seems like most companies are in a bit of a mess when it comes to IT but don't want to pay money to have it sorted out or be told about it :-)

You seem to work long hours in NZ for little pay and very few benefits, standard is 20 days holiday per year. Have a look at Hudson or Candle for a salary survey.

If possible try to get employment before coming out, I am qualified to the hilt and found it hard to find a job (8 weeks), NZ companies use the excuse of "you don't have NZ experience, so therefore we are not taking a chance on you and you may go home", to be frank unless you are in sales you don't need NZ experience, and it does not take much to learn.

Yeah I'm in IT development, contracting at the moment, arguably this may be more sought after than infrastructure? This is my first job in NZ although I do know others here in the IT field here. Hence I'm not the best informed to generalise though.

It took me just over 3 weeks to get something after going to a lot of interviews. The common theme I found at the interviews was they didn't like the 1 year working holiday visa, so I had to do a bit of convincing that I'd initially came over on that because it was the easiest option, then work towards migration. This wasn't an issue in Sydney, but I guess there is more job movement there.

The next thing I felt was that companies expect you to do a lot to get a job, even though your profession is sought after. Most places wanted at least a 3 round interview process, with several wanting you to take long tests. This caused things to move slowly and span weeks. I also didn't like the fact I could invest so much time on a position that I may not even get. Plus the other problem is when job offers do come in there is only a certain amount of time that window is open, but that window could appear at different times. Companies aren't doing themselves any favours here. I've been on the interview panel many times in previous jobs, and I know the importance of getting the right person, but I personally feel it is unreasonable to expect candidates to do so much, especially in a market where demand outweighs supply.

To sum up though I'm happy in my job and personally prefer NZ over Oz
