Swimming in NZ - 29% Totally Unpure
Many top swimming spots unsafe - survey
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4786010a11.html "...29 percent of beaches, lakes and rivers had bacteria levels so high that the Ministry for the Environment recommended staying out of the water" |
Re: Swimming in NZ - 29% Totally Unpure
And yet people have been swimming there for centuries. Where DO they stack the bodies?? ;)

:) Here was I wondering what I would look like in my swimming togs this summer. I may as well just wear a shroud. |
Re: Swimming in NZ - 29% Totally Unpure
It would be really useful if someone published the list - has anyone got a link to this?
A shame that so many are unsafe - maybe this is an area where some "recession-busting" money could be spent? |

oh how unusual another thing to run down about New Zealand, just when Im feeling fed up in this godamm place, cheers for that.
but I wont go in the water anyway, stick to my pool thanks :p |
Re: Swimming in NZ - 29% Totally Unpure
A key thing to remember here is that often the water is safe in the sea - BUT not after heavy rain. So avoid taking a dip after torrential rain as you are likely to be swimming in overflow from drains etc. It washes away quite quickly and I have never seen anyone die - it is just that the potential of picking ear / eye infections and stomach upsets is higher at this time ;-(

I think if you compared other areas that would not be too bad. Last year our favourite swimhole was x-dd, so we didn't swim there, but our oldest son did with his friends and they were all fine. I suspect that before it was fashionable to test water we swam in all sorts of crap.

This is a bug-bear of mine! The Tuki-Tuki is either too fast flowing to be safe (after rain) or too polluted to swim in (when it hasn't rained for yonks) but heaps do

Ever gone swimming in the Med?
As a kid I snorkel, sometimes following these curious large pipes that ran out from the rocks or beach......you can guess what I found at the not too distant end.... Freshwater run-off is a big factor in swimming water quality here...tip don't swim off city beaches after a storm or heavy rain. |
