Sustainable salary in Auckland?
Hi all,
So currently living in Surrey, on £22500 per annum.
Salary is not amazing but can afford a decent house share, transport, plenty of food, frequent holidays, going out infrequently (cinema, restruants, pubs) etc.
If I don't go on any given month on a holiday I can probably save £300-400.
I can't really complain.
I'm considering a 6 months placement with my current employer.
Was wondering what would the equivalent annual salary in Auckland be, not an exact currency exchange but what amount will allow me to have the same standard of living?
Many thanks

Your idea of sustainable might be a bit different from his. If he house shares like he is now, and avoids the more expensive suburbs like the one you live in, he can do perfectly well on less than $70,000. In fact if I recall, your husband supports a wife and child on much less so it is possible.

I think the placement looks as if it'll be Auckland
Depends where you live and what sort of accommodation you have. You could live on the $55k but to have a better life, i'd say $60,000+

I would go along with that. It just depends what you mean by sustainable as a single person. House sharing will bring your costs down considerably. More single people than not live off less than 50k in Auckland and many are quite happy. It might not be particularly luxurious but it sounds like you have your feet on the ground. Your major cost will be rent so how much disposable income you would have might depend largely on how many people you are willing to share with. All the best.

I said $70,000 as a base line. $100,000 would be lovely. He may not find a house share too so then would have to pay all of the rent. It was just a guess. Our suburb is nice but our rent is cheap and was the cheapest that was available near to hubby's work when we arrived here.
I don't think you need to sound so personal in your post. This isn't about me it's about someone else.

If you like a decent (sic) house, go out, and travel I would also go for a higher amount. Houses in Auckland can be thoroughly disgusting, even dangerous to your health, and are expensive no matter what. Don't rent without viewing! $60,000 to $70,000 sounds about right if you don't want to spend a high amount of your time searching for bargains, and if you want to live in a suburb that offers a little bit more than endless rows of residential houses and a few supermarkets.

Re: Sustainable salary in Auckland?
I would say at least $60k in Auckland for a single guy. That'll afford you a good lifestyle - decent place to live, eating out, drinks out, trips and even a decent holiday to Ozzy, Fiji, Vanuatu etc during the year. You could survive on less, but to really enjoy NZ and possibly surrounding areas then more like $60k.
Good luck
Good luck

Single bloke?
Could be done on 50K easy, assuming your not dining at Tribeca every night and drinking Moet in the Viaduct.
Everybody shares a different view! if its only for 6 months, then really an average salary would suffice.

I don't suppose anyone here has tried living in Auckland on $50k but are happy to recommend that you do so; for a start have a think about the sort of place you expect to be living and see how much that will cost and see where you go from there.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/
You'll have to think about how you will get to work; whether you're going to have a car to get out and about at weekends, parking costs anything from $8 to 15 per day in CBD, or use public transport etc.
See tax calculator here so you can see what your take home pay might look like: http://www.salaries.co.nz/a/salary-tax-calculator/

Re: Sustainable salary in Auckland?
Apologies for wading in here when, in all honesty I know nowt about Auckland. I've done enough of the meeting & goodbye-ing to people at the airport to feel like I know Auckland airport pretty well, but beyond that ………. tbh I'm pretty disinterested in city life, been there, done that living in and around London most of my adult life. So, please feel free to shoot me down in flames……..but…….. my 22 year old son recently got his first post-grad job in Auckland. He earns $47,000 a year, is in a house share in Remuera with 3 other professionals paying $200 a month into a house pot to cover rent, utilities , SKY, internet etc & basic household necessities, cleaning products, toilet paper & the like. Admittedly so far he's not faced any winter power bills, but the rest of the house have and apparently they build up enough credit with the lower summer bills to not need to fork out any more in the winter. He runs a car, it's not new, but it's reliable (so far) & gets him from A-B. He's also now paying off his student loan, only a small percentage of his salary goes on that, but it is an additional expense. I know as an absolute fact that his social life hasn't suffered
since he moved, and he assures me he's managing to save as well. I don't know how much, I can't imagine it's a lot…..but it's something.
A single person house-sharing does have lower expenses simply because the cost of everything is divided by the number of house-mates, so, whilst it's not a lifestyle I'd choose personally these days, it's an economical, and sociable one. And, going from my son's experiences I'd say it's do-able on $50k. If it's only a 6 month placement that's on offer I'd say "go for it"……great opportunity, great experience, & find out about Auckland & NZ for yourself. At the end of the day if it doesn't work out you go back after the 6 months with a whole new set of experiences behind you.
Earning $70k & upwards would be fantastic, but depending on your age, experience & profession it's possibly an unrealistic expectation.

Just because a family living in a nice suburb couldn't see themselves living that way, on that amount - and there have been some who have been quite vocal about upping sticks and storming off in a huff - doesn't mean that it is not feasible given the appropriate circumstances.
