Hi all,
I love it here - i.e. the country. A moaner I am not.
I do feel compelled however to sound a note of caution.

I had a really good job in the UK. It was always a bit of a risk coming here in that my new job may not have been all it appeared. Unfortunately this possibility has come to pass. I simply cannot bear my job. For the second Christmas in row I have had a miserable holiday deeply regretting the decision to leave my previous job.

I really love it here - no-one has to sell this country to me. For me, it is hands down better than the UK. It's hard for me to get another job here that I would be happy with because of my specialism - so I was rather putting all my eggs in this one basket. It may be Australia or a significant pay cut - neither of which are particularly appealing in that I don't want to leave NZ.

All I would say is be absolutely careful that you won't miss what you are giving up. For me, that's the job. NZ is fine.

Please, make sure you won't miss your previous life more than enjoying your new experience.

Sorry it's come to this. Hope things work out for you. I've just come back from Auckland. We went to see SIL new house as she moves on Friday to Silverdale. We had coffee in the Silverdale Centre. We also visited the new houses in the surrounding area.

Hope something comes up.

Perhaps there is something that can help make your work less crap? Take on a trainee, come up with a little project, redesign some processes? It may only be a little thing but it might help.

Pray tell, how are people to know?

Unfortunately, I missed some lessons and failed my CSE Crystal Ball Gazing exams. Hindsight is a wonderful thing; after several crap jobs here I can fully appreciate what a fantastic job I had in the UK, although it certainly didn't feel like that at the time.

A point very well made.

I 100% know I'm giving up an excellent job in London. Great company, great boss, I enjoy my colleagues. I've worked there for nigh on 9 years. I'll miss it whether or not NZ is a success for my family and I.

Having said this, I'd genuinely rather take the chance and see how it works out in NZ. I'd rather hold my hands up and admit (to myself first of all) it didn't work than spend life wondering 'what if?'.

Hopefully it does work out and I think the reason behind the risk is because I think it more than likely it will. Clearly, nothing is certain.

The same goes for leaving family and friends behind.

I sincerely hope something more enjoyable comes up for you.

I 100% sympathise and wouldn't want anyone stuck in a job they hate but TBH it is both almost guaranteed that some aspect of migrating won't work out and 100% impossible to predict which aspect(s) they will be upfront - a look-and-see visit isn't likely to tell you that about employment either.

Except those souls who take part in "Wanted Down Under" very few people will have the opportunity to start work in NZ and still genuinely have the safety-net of returning to their previous job in the UK if it doesn't work out.

I hope you find a way through it to a job you do like here (given that seems the only aspect that hasn't worked out).

Work ethic is a lot different. I transferred IBM UK -> NZ (You don't really it's leave/new job). Don't expect it to be the same. It definitely won't be.
I could handle the workload, but not the racism from the 2 Fijiian Indians I had in my 'team'. Subsequently i foundout NZ is the Holy Grail for them and they will stop at nothing to muscle in. (But different set of values for POMMS) I handled it for 3yrs. Heaven forbid you say something back (my other colleague did - a South African fella - he got fired - tribunal) It drove me to jump ship in the end to an IBM business partner but then that was even worse !!
In hindsight I was too naive, but then what can you do when you are 'fresh off the boat' !! I should have handled things a lot differently and my career has suffered.
Be careful, there's trouble in that there paradise ... as has been previously said you spend a lot of your precious time at work ....
And I still love the place

Thanks for those words of caution. I would think very carefully about which frying pan I move to... I have 18 months of my current contract to ensure that I make the right decision next. Thanks for your advice.
