Re: Supermarket sweep
I bought a Rangemaster in 1998 - cost around $7000 - wonderful beast - gas hobs and 2 electric ovens - don't know about Agas - lots of places in NZ with no gas, so would have to be bottled gas.

I've seen something like an Aga but it runs on oil. You can get some lovely woodburning ovens too. I don't know where I saw them now though

Ok. You've inspired me Soulflour,Pixi dust,Poppets,Helinuk and the rest of you.
Monday morning arrives and so does the post and so do the bills (more of them! ) so bang goes that idea until......
On the way to school, I was chatting with my neighbour and explained my idea and the fact it was on hold, when she shouts " Don't worry, I've got a breadmaker in the back of my cupboard you can have!!! It's a big one and you can make jam in it too!!" And the bonus is that she wanted nothing for it!!!!! ( bought a pressie to say thanks anyway!!). Tonight I've reserved the same slow cooker in Argos for £29.99, so all set up and no excuse now!!!
So watch this space

I love using the slow cooker when I'm working- I throw indredients in - turn on and when I come home at tea time there's our meal all ready!
We love the smell of bread first thing in morning. I also make pizza on Saturdays and often pitta bread, rolls, as far as dough stage then cook in oven.
Good luck and enjoy.

After reading your postings and conversations that we had already had as a family when we first discussed NZ, I have started to cook more from scratch!!!
To help me in said task, I decided to invest in a breadmaker & slow cooker. After looking in my local Waitrose and nearly being overcome with shock at the cost (£99 for a breadmaker and £39.99 for a 6.5L slow cooker) I decided to look on the net, found the whole lot for £108 and was quite chuffed.

When I was looking for ours I kept reading everywhere how it had to be a panasonic, and that you shouldn't buy a cheap one - but I went to get my slow cooker one day and noel leemings were selling the breville one at $70 so I bought that (panasonic $199!) and it's been fantastic - i use it almost everyday (and that's over a year now).
I love the slow cooker too, but I must admit that i'm a bit limited to what I cook in it (stews, basically either veggie (pulses) or meat). I'd love to learn a bit more versitility with it...

Rosemary Pork with Red Wine Risotto
1 3-pound boneless pork loin
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
6 sprigs fresh rosemary
2 tablespoons butter, divided
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup onion, minced
1 cup Arborio rice
2 cups chicken broth
1 cup fruity red wine
3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
DIRECTIONS:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat on the stove. When the oil is hot, add 3 sprigs of rosemary and place the pork roast on top of them. Season with the salt and pepper. Brown the pork roast on all sides, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from pan and place the roast and the rosemary in a 5 quart Crock-Pot slow cooker.
Deglaze the pan on the stove by adding1/4 cup of the chicken broth to the hot pan and stirring rapidly with a whisk, loosening the browned bits of pork.
Add 1 tablespoon of the butter, the garlic and onion and cook, stirring with a spoon, until the onion is translucent. Add the rice and stir well. Cook until the rice just begins to brown, about 2 minutes. Stir in the remaining chicken broth and wine. Remove from heat and pour into the slow cooker around the roast.
Place cover on slow cooker and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours, stirring occasionally. The internal temperature of the pork should register 170 degrees. When the cooking time is done, remove the roast, slice and keep warm on a platter. Remove and discard the rosemary.
Stir the remaining butter and Parmesan cheese into the rice. Spoon the risotto around the roast slices and garnish with the remaining fresh rosemary sprigs.
Serves 6.

So... sounds scrummy - how much per head would it cost in NZ (from supermarket or elsewhere...)
