Stuff declares NZ a third world country

Re: Stuff declares NZ a third world country
You can't seriously think this is a news article? It's the opinion of a disgruntled immigrant. You by any chance?
There are so many inaccurate and wide sweeping statements that have little bearing on life here.

What is there to disagree with?
Pollution from dairy farms is appalling!
Power does fail on a regular basis.
Phone coverage is patchy.
Health & Safety is way behind the times
Houses are crap.
Having said all that I don't want to live in any other place.

The poor sods in Tokomaru might agree with you, after watching a piece on Campbell live about their water supply.
Judging by comments on the stuff website, you are only allowed to criticise NZ if you were born here, but a big no-no if your an immigrant/PR and pay taxes.
Spot on.

the one thing that takes my interest in that article is around how kiwis are more polluting per head than Americans. that is quite a statement. when I think about it, NZ has poorly insulated homes (single glazing), inefficient and fuel dirty heaters. what is more obvious though is the age of cars here and more especially the vast number of big gas guzzlers in Auckland which people really don't need. certainly I don't think NZ is as green as the media and tourist companies make it out to be.
I think the article on stuff that is far more relevant is this one:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff-nation/...if-you-re-rich
nzs great if you have lots of money, which I think is true if you plan on staying here.

Richard Prebble once described New Zealand as the Poland of the South Pacific.
I agree housing affordability is pretty silly at the moment but it's only a bubble caused by ultra low interest rates, a quirky banking system, a couple of major geological events and outdated planning laws. You have to expect that there will be cyclical problems with any country and if i was going to go to live in another country for a better quality of life it wouldn't be the UK .
Back in the 90's land and houses where cheap but unemployment ran at 10%+.

I met a woman recently arrived in NZ. Her family had had their farm confiscated in their homeland, I guess they were refugees. She felt NZ was very backward. It transpired that for the first time in her life she was having to do her own cleaning and cooking. She was also struggling with her children because she had never had to look after them without help from a multitude of servants. She was totally disgruntled and disillusioned with her new country. I don't think she meant to be insulting, she was simply experiencing huge culture shock. She peeved me off at the time but in retrospect I now just feel sorry for her. Adapting to NZ must be very difficult if you've previously enjoyed a life of extreme wealth and privilege.
