Join a club or go to church, volunteer or make mates, it's the only way I've ever got a job over here. Or go door knocking as another poster put it, that's another way I've got jobs, just go in and look eager and ask them for a job straight up. Be bold, stop waiting for jobs to be advertised and just bug a company with your awesomeness if you want to work there.
Then once you have the job be tough, you will have a pretty hard time at first as it's a bit of a bully culture in the work environment. But if your well ard and take no nonsense you will get respect and then it's onwards and upwards from there.
