Default starting out....advice welcomed

Hello, my husband & I have decided to make the move to NZ. My husband is an ODP in theatres and I'm a theatre nurse also. We have 15 wk old twins & would love to bring them up in the outdoors lifestyle. We have been researching Wellington & Auckland & the surrounding areas. What we are looking for is advice on which areas would be worth be considering for us - anywhere in NZ, on a budget of $250,000 houses. We would like to be 1/2 hr from the beach, hospitals within commuting distance, nice areas to bring up children. Thanks in advance

Hi Lindsey,

welcome to BE.

sorry can't help on the work front and how your skill would fit in but if you check out http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ you can see if your jobs are on the Skills list which would make getting here easier. Also look at sites like Seek and Trade Me.
Maybe even contact some hospitals direct and see if your needs are required.
Good luck

It might be an idea to get your professional registration sorted first.

Is that $250,000 deposit or total value of property you are looking to buy cos you probably will struggle to find something around that price.

hi there, im an odp, in the process of applying for a 2 year work visa - just submitted our EOI form - we are hopefully going via the skilled migrant route - odps are on the immediate skills shortage list, i take it that you are skilled in anaesthetics as odps dont do recovery or scrub! they are anaesthetic technicians and only train in anaesthetics, also be warned that some hospitals like/expect you to cover 2 lists also - not sure who your duty of care goes to if the sh*t is hittin the fan!!!lol. please feel free to ask anything, i am very new here, (this forum) myself but there is a wealth of info here and very friendly people too. look forward to hearing from you

Hiya.

We live in Marlborough and the local hospital seems to attracts a lot of ex-pat medical professionals. Everyone comes here for the lifestyle!

We have since had two beautiful girls, whom I am happy to say love being outdoors and going to the beach.

Not sure about your price expectations regarding house prices, but you can get a entry level 3 bed house for about 250K here. A modern 4 bed in a easy care section would be about $350k.

Look on TradeMe to get a realistic idea about housing and Google earth to get an idea of different areas. 250k in Wellington would be unheard of i.m.h.o.

At best you'd get a shabby old wee house in the worst parts of South Auckland for $250k but could probably get quite a nice apartment elsewhere depending on what hospital you went for. Takapuna would be a good bet if you were up for apartment living, right beside the beach and North Shore hospital close by.
