Staffordshire Oatcakes
I found these at a wee cafe on Beach Road/Anzac Road in Auckland on tuesday. They are gorgeous. The guy who runs the place, Neil opened up four months ago. He's from Stoke-on-Trent, so these are the real deal.
I had a sausage & mushroom one which set me up rather nicely for my biophysics lecture. It must've worked because I actually understood something for a change .
He has a FB page which is where I happened upon him. If you've never had a Staffordshire oatcake then you need to try one, they are yummy. I'm all for supporting Brits in business over here

For those who have never tried them & don't live in Auckland, Derby/Staffordshire Oatcakes are very easy to make. Here's a recipe we use:-

The internet has given us instant access information, please don't take everything out there as gospel.
The people from Stoke- you know what I mean- - Would never even consider a Derbyshire oatcake, its more of a potato cake without the potato, Thick and doughy, yuk.

Re: Staffordshire Oatcakes
As retired oatcake bakers (the Staffordshire variety, and the best) this recipe is about as far from a REAL oatcake mix as a mince pie is from a strudel. Granted, its a batter, but Staffordshire oatcake??? NEVER.

Re: Staffordshire Oatcakes
I used to live in Burton-on-Trent & worked in Derby for over a decade but I've never heard of Derbyshire oatcakes. None of my Derbyshire born & bred friends have ever mentioned them either.
So Staffordshire oatcakes pour moi

Re: Staffordshire Oatcakes
You're welcome. And welcome to our cosy NZ forums. Where are you hoping to be living/working in NZ? I assume that you are coming over for a reccie in December.

Re: Staffordshire Oatcakes
We are coming in Dec, staying unitl the end of March, with a hop accross the ditch to Oz for a month in between. Originally this was just a big trip in between a career change. Then we finally decided to move and put an end to the previous 18 months of deliberation.
So our big Holiday is still a big holiday, but its also a final reccie and towards the end it's job hunting for me.
We have been busy de-cluttering, gathering paperwork, getting shipping quotes, making contacts etc. If all goes well we could be headed out around April/May. Other half may have to hang back to finish up if I need to start work before we are done.
So thats the plan. but where.... thats a good one. Im being flexible to aid in grabbing a job. I'll probably end up in Auckland or Wellington because I work in IT. Nothing is off the table at this point though!

Re: Staffordshire Oatcakes
Sounds like a great plan. Best of luck with it. I'm biased towards Auckland & now that I can get proper oatcakes here then that's another tick for Auckland .
Best of luck with your plans & shout out if you need any help with things.
