splitting flight tickets?
hi, may need to pop to uk for a week or so, bad family news...
is it cheaper to split tickets like the trains, or is it not worth the hassle (or is it not possible)?

Re: splitting flight tickets?
its often cheaper to split your train tickets, say buy a return birmimgham to bristol and then bristol to exeter than a straight brum to exeter
i doubt the same works with airlines, it would cause headaches with baggage and checking in, plus i dont think i can buy tickets for a return in a country i dont live...
anyway i'm on the search for some reasonable flight tickets... seems 2200 bucks is about the cheapest i can get auckland-london

A nephew used them a year or 18months ago - he was planning to stop in Thailand anyway- I think it was ok, If I recall correctly the only 'complaint' he had was that on one of the legs the plane hadn't been refitted with seat-back screens.
Re your original question, my wife flew out from the UK to NZ via a Brisbane stopover for a couple of weeks, she flew Singapore to Brisbane then AirNZ to Rotorua via Wellington. Though I think if you're flying from/to major centres as oppposed to regional airports a single carrier is cheaper. Of course there's always the possibility of missing a connection with seperate tickets and having to buy a new ticket for your onward flight (which wasn't an issue with a two week stopover).

$2200 is about the best you can expect, sure someone will tell you that they got cheaper but when you gotta go, you just gotta go. Every time we've looked I have not seen anything better than $2200 and if there is, there's some awkward conditions attached. Last time I looked Royal Brunei was the cheapest but going with them is not entirely without issues, it's a long flight, no alcohol and poor entertainment. They do throw in free stopovers though, usually they're offering a hotel day room for a sleep and a shower or something.
